SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco BART janitor managed to quadruple his base pay, making more than $271,000 in 2015, according to a report.
The janitor’s base salary is just under $58,000, and it is raising eyebrows. But Liang Zhao Zhang apparently did it by working like crazy.
A report from Transparent California says he worked an average of 114 hours a week in 2015.
His overtime in 2015 amounted to $162,000.
There were questions about whether a select few BART employees are getting a high concentration of overtime, but BART says he simply signs up for every slot that becomes available–and works pretty much every day of the year cleaning stations.
BART also says that he’s signing up for overtime that is available to others.
Transparent California compiles compensation information for a number of public sector employees.
It says even without benefits, the average BART worker made nearly $78,000 last year, triple what janitors make in the rest of the country.
