OAKLAND (KRON) — Measure JJ is aimed at protecting renters from evictions and rent increases in Oakland.
The measure would require owners get preapproval for rent increases above the Consumer Price Index, which was 2% last year.
When it comes to evictions, the “Just Cause” protection — which means tenants can only be evicted with “just case” — will be extended to properties built before 1995. It’s currently set at 1980, so thousands more homes will be protected under the umbrella of “just case.”
This measure would also give more power to the Oakland Rent Board… and strengthen public information and awareness so that tenants and landlords know how much rent can be legally charged.
