Young San Jose man killed in high-speed crash identified

SANTA CLARA (KRON) — A young man who was killed when he crashed his car street racing Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara has been identified as 20-year-old Juan Mayoral-Ocampo of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara
County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Mayoral-Ocampo was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro while racing a silver Acura TSX or TL northbound on San Tomas Expressway around 12:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.

Witnesses reported seeing the cars travel 100 mph as they approached slow traffic at the San Tomas Expressway/ Homestead Road intersection, Lee said.

The Camaro swerved right and crashed into a sidewalk.

The car then became wedged between a tree and a wall, and caught on fire.

However, investigators believe Mayoral-Ocampo died in the crash impact, before flames ignited.

The Acura driver fled the scene, and was never caught.

He is described as a  Hispanic man in his mid-20s to mid-30s with a faded haircut, according to Lee.

Anyone with information on the suspect driver or vehicle is asked to call the CHP San Jose area office (408) 467-5400.
