SAN JOSE (BCN)—A $10,000 reward is out for information leading to an arrest in a Sunday evening shooting that targeted two police officers in San Jose.

The San Jose Police Officers’ Association has offered the money for information that can help investigators apprehend the suspect who fired at two officers on routine patrol near Avalani Avenue and Luby Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, SJPOA director Sean Pritchard said during a news conference at the neighborhood this afternoon.

The officers were working on gang eradication efforts in the area and confronted a group of people who quickly fled, according to Pritchard, a sergeant with the department.

One member of the group took out a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officers as he fled, Pritchard said.

The officers weren’t struck by the bullets and didn’t return fire, police said.

“We have had an absolute breakdown in society when a subject feels that it is OK to point a firearm and ultimately try to kill a police officer,” Pritchard said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man who is in his 20s, stands about 6 feet tall, weighs around 180 pounds, had short, slicked black hair and was clean-shaven. He wore a black and gray Pendleton-brand sweater with a white T-shirt underneath and dark-colored pants, police said.

Officers searched for the suspect at the scene, but were unable to find him Sunday night, according to police.

The department isn’t daunted by Sunday evening’s shooting, intends to return to the neighborhood for patrols, and doesn’t plan on adding any security measures, police Chief Eddie Garcia said.

Officers have the option of working in a two-person patrol car, but are always reminded to be vigilant of their surroundings, the chief said.

“Our officers know it’s a dangerous job, but they know they have a duty to protect this community,” Garcia said.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 911. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-7867.
