SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee says the city will remain a sanctuary despite statements from President-elect Donald Trump that he will deport millions of people who are in the country illegally.
Trump also has said he would cancel federal funding for sanctuary cities such as San Francisco that decline to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
A defiant Lee said at a raucous Monday rally at City Hall that San Francisco has been and always will be a shelter for people gays and lesbians, religious minorities and people who are living in the country illegally.
He said San Francisco receives between $500 million and $1 billion annually from the federal government for services that include veterans care, housing and health care.
San Francisco has been a sanctuary city since 1989.
