Sunnyvale construction worker killed in fall down several stories

SUNNYVALE (BCN) — A construction worker fell down several stories at a construction site in Sunnyvale Tuesday morning, according to the city’s Department of Public Safety.

The person has been identified as 34-year-old Jose Delgado Lopez of Union City, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Emergency crews responded to a medical call at 222 North Wolfe Road between East Arques Avenue and Central Expressway at about 7:50 a.m., public safety Capt. Shawn Ahearn said.

Arriving crews learned a construction worker fell down multiple stories and pronounced him dead at the scene, Ahearn said.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health was notified of the death in which the employee fell seven stories and is investigating the incident, Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Julia Bernstein said.

The site was developed by Menlo Park-based Landbank Investments LLC for a 777,100-square-foot tech campus designed for LEED Platinum certification, according to the company’s website.

The project was sold last year to Jay Paul Company in San Francisco that will lease the offices to Apple Inc., according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Garnett.

Level 10 Construction, based in Sunnyvale, was the builder on the site where work has been suspended until further notice, Chief Financial Officer Jim Evans said.

The construction company is conducting an investigation into the fall with Cal/OSHA and looking at ways to prevent future accidents, according to Evans.

“This is a very tragic accident and (has) affected us all,” Evans said.

The worker who died was an employee of subcontractor Alamillo Rebar, a concrete reinforcement business, Evans said.

The family-owned business with a Bay Area office in Benicia didn’t immediately return requests for comment Wednesday.
