OVIEDO, FL (KRON) — A mother is accused of strangling her one-year-old daughter to death with a string of Halloween lights.
Authorities in Florida say the mother claims to have found the girl unresponsive after taking a shower.
“My kids were out here playing and I came out and her like, her um, the um, from the, I have the Halloween lights and it was wrapped around her neck. I was gone for two seconds,” 27-year-old Kristen Depasquale frantically told dispatchers.
She told 9-1-1 that her 2-year-old son used Halloween lights to hurt her 1-year-old daughter.
But investigator’s say her story doesn’t add up.
A medical examiner said that an adult-type force was applied to the little girl’s neck for more than four minutes before she died.
DePasquale’s public defender said the mother is devastated and struggling to deal with what happened.
“She’s very upset. She’s lost a child. The child that she loved. She was the mother of two children. She loved her children very much and she’s lost one of her children. She’s very upset about that,” Public Defender Timothy Caudill said.
The other child is currently staying with other family members.
