HEALDSBURG (KRON)—The funeral for the 4-year-old girl who was allegedly drowned by her father in a baptismal pool was held in Windsor Monday.
Maria Jose Ordaz-Chavarria was found lifeless by police on Nov. 20 around 8:30 p.m.
Her father 42-year-old Gerardo Mendoza Ordaz was arrested for allegedly drowning his daughter in a baptismal pool at St. John’s Catholic Church in Healdsburg.
Officers learned of the incident when Ordaz ran across the street to the police department carrying his lifeless daughter and crying out for help.
Police say he was naked when he arrived at the police department with his daughter and his 9-year-old son.
The girl was pronounced dead the Healdsburg District Hospital 90 minutes after she arrived.
Ordaz has been charged with murder for his daughter’s death and infliction of emotional distress for having his son there at the time of the alleged incident.
Prosecutors have called for another doctor to evaluate Ordaz. He will be back in court on December 19.
The judge in the case granted protective orders against Ordaz which does not allow him to contact his wife or son.
A memorial has been set up at the Healdsburg church where Maria Jose Ordaz-Chavarria died.
The baptismal pool has been drained and there is no word when it will be used again.
An autopsy has been performed for the 4-year-old, but it is not complete yet.
