VIDEO: Congress observes moment of silence for Oakland fire victims

(KRON)—The U.S. House of Representatives held a moment of silence Thursday for the 36 people who died in the Oakland warehouse fire Friday night.

“These were young men and women who had their whole future ahead of them,” Rep. Barbara Lee said. “Their lives were tragically cut short. We want to extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims’ families and their loved ones during this anguishing time.”

Lee visited the site of the fire on Tuesday night and was part of a press conference with Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed and other local officials.

“Last weekend, my home city of Oakland suffered a horrific tragedy,” Lee said. “A devastating fire at an artists’ collective warehouse in the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland killed 36 young, talented individuals.”

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that all 36 victims have been identified and their families have been notified. The county coroner’s office has not officially released the names of some victims.
