BART fares to increase 2.7 percent in 2018

WALNUT CREEK (KRON)– Riding BART will soon cost more as the transit agency plans to hike up fares in 2018.

Starting Jan. 1 fares will increase, including discounted prices.  The price hike occurs every other year to keep up with inflation.

The minimum fare will increase to $2.00 for Adults, $1 for Youth, and $.75 for Senior/Disabled Clipper users.

KRON4’s Lydia Pantazes says there is a way to save. Currently, children ages 4-12 are eligible for youth discounts. At the top of the new year, anyone 18 or younger will be able to get a 50-percent discount. Children who are 4 and under always ride free.

Senior and persons with disabilities will continue to get a 62.5-percent discount.

The extra cost is being added to encourage customers to use Clipper for fare payment. There won’t be an extra cost for Clipper fares.
