FREMONT (KRON) — A deadly hit-and-run accident in Fremont has been met with strong reaction from some residents.
Joythi Rajavaram witnessed the fatal hit-and-run accident that happened Tuesday evening on East Warren Avenue.
An elderly man was struck and killed just east of Bradley Street
“We walked over and saw what happened, and we were very scared,” Rajavaram said.
“It was crazy,” resident Matthew Acevedo said. “I asked a cop what was going on, and he said there was a fatal accident…a hit-and-run.”
It was dark. The victim was hit as he tried to cross the street.
He was not in the crosswalk.
The driver kept on going and was located when police found her car at the Franciscan Center a few blocks away.
Now, Rajavaram and her neighbors are circulating a petition on change.org calling for a stop light or stop sign on East Warren.
“It’s very scary because the people they don’t stop,” Rajavaram said. “Pedestrians have to watch out because they can’t see how fast they are going.”
The posted speed limit here is 35, but neighbors say most drivers are doing 45 or 50 and then some.
The coroner’s office has identified the victim as 65-year-old Joseph Lynch of Fremont.
The driver, who has not been identified, is a 58-year-old woman from San Leandro. She told police she didn’t stop because she was frightened.
Police said she showed no signs of being under the influence.
She was released pending further investigation.
