AUSTIN (KXAN) — From the Hill Country all the way to Fayette County, most Central Texans saw at least some snow flurries in their area Thursday evening.
KXAN received reports from viewers in Hays, Caldwell, and Bastrop counties who recorded 4 inches of snow in their yards. Photos and videos also showed a winter wonderland in Wimberley. People woke up to snow still on the ground in some areas.
What started as rain in the Austin-area Thursday afternoon slowly turned into snow. Initially, it started as flurries being reported in the Cedar Park area around 3:30 p.m. At the time, the temperature was hovering around 40 degrees. But as the snow started to get heavier, the temperature started to drop.
By 5 p.m., more areas were being blanketed with the white stuff — which for most Central Texans is a cause to jump outside and make mini snowmen or semi-snow angels. Many KXAN viewers sent pictures of children making snowballs and several pictures children in awe as they gaze up at the snowflakes.
By 6 p.m., most of the area was covered in snow. But by 9 p.m. most of the precipitation had cleared the Austin-metro area, but the temperature did drop to 32 degrees.
Austin officially measured .40 inch at Camp Mabry, the most snow since Feb. 4, 2011. ABIA recorded 1.3 inches, thought to be the most snow there since 1985.
Drivers should be careful when they drive overnight since some overpasses and bridges could freeze. Some school districts have decided to delay or cancel classes for Friday making it a snow day (even though there might not be snow on the ground come Friday morning).
All of Central Texas is under a freeze warning from midnight until 9 a.m. And as the joke goes, if you don’t like the weather in Texas today, stick around until tomorrow. By Friday afternoon, the temperatures will reach back up to the mid-50s.
Waking up to a snow day!
