80 Oakland Police Officers to Receive Layoff Notices Under Budget Passed Thursday
Created by Brian Shields on 6/24/2010 9:22:00 PM

OAKLAND (KRON) -- The city of Oakland will send layoff notices to 80 police officers next month under the terms of a new budget passed by a five-to-three margin Thursday night.

Councilmembers Jane Brunner, Patricia Kernighan, Nancy Nadel, Jean Quan and Ignacio De La Fuente voted in favor of the budget.  Desley Brooks, Larry Reid, and Rebecca Kaplan voted no.

Under the terms of the new budget, the city will layoff the 80 officers in the next few weeks.  Voters will be asked to repeal portions of Measure Y which set minimum police staffing levels in November.  If that repeal passes, 27 additional police officers will lose their jobs.  If voters reject the appeal, 122 officers will get layoff notices on January 1st.

Dozens of residents waited for hours for a chance to speak to the council before the vote.

There is still a chance the 80 officers could save their jobs.  City leaders continue to negotiate with the Oakland Police Officers Association over a plan that would see policemen and women contribute to their pensions.  Members of the police union are the only city employees that currently don't pay part of the costs of their pension.

Stay tuned to KRON 4 and KRON4.com for the latest on this developing story.

I believe in the power of prayer " Jesus Christ never disappoints his people . We , community of oakland should support our police officers , we need them and as a citizen of this city , I truly appreciate the time and effort these fine officers do !

The police have already given up concessions once in October. How much is a persons life worth to the Mayor and the city council. I would not like to come to Oakland after they lay off 80 police officers.

over paid in retirement
I think its rediculous that Oakland Police get more money in their pensions than they make actually working at the job. What dummy thought up this idea, "I don't know", but it would be to everyones best interest for them to contribute to their own pensions just like everyone else does. And, since Oakland is one of the worst cities in California and probably the whole united states when it comes to crime, laying off cops will have a ripple effect amongts the whole bay area. Their hoodlums and drug dealers will run rampant and spill crime into El Cerrito, Berkeley, San Leandro, Hayward, and maybe even as far as Fremont.

Oakland in trouble.
The Mayor and City Council seem to miss the point with the program cuts. They say if they cut all of the city programs they would still have to lay off police officers. So why not cut all of the programs and lay off fewer police officers. Then become fiscally responsible and build the funding to bring back the programs. If not the few officers left to patrol the city will become so overworked they will just become paper pushers and the criminals will take over - even more than they have. Take away the police and who is left to enforce the rules? If the city council starts fiddling with the pension and salery, officers will leave for employment in other departments or retire. No one will want to work for a police department that is lacking in safety due to low numbers of officers and not giving any incentive to make up for the lack in safety.

Even if they shut down every other department in Oakland, it would not be enough to solve this mess. OPD union has so far failed to negotiate at all, and now that cuts are coming to the police department, they are willing to negotiate....big surprise. 90% of OPD officers do not live in Oakland while 80% of all other city employees do live in Oakland. There is something wrong with that picture. OPR needs to help sovle this mess, not just turn Oakland into a city dominated by police.

I think they should take a 30% cut. At least they still have a job and safety.

Bad Move
This bad decision not affects Oakland, but also the surrounding cities. As crime spill sover into Berkeley, San Leandro, and Alameda as a result of lack of adequate police protection, everyone will suffer. Maybe a second look at who is warming chairs at City Hall amound the staff is in order!

Stupid Taxpayer

Badge Power Rules
Police and other cival servants are above us all. Why shouldn't we pay them $150,000.00 dollars a year for the rest of their life. People think it some kind of scam. How dare anyone question the motives of the unions or ask them to even pay a fraction of their own pension or medical coverage. How dare you. Those in power alway have our best interest in mind.

I can not believe it has come to this. Oakland police should not have even been considered for the chopping block. Why do we keep pushing hard working people?!?
