| Monday Morning BART and Wildfires | (08/17/2009) |
| 7:33 | Brian Shields: Good morning and welcome to KRON 4 live coverage of the Santa Cruz wildfires and the decision to cancel this morning's planned BART strike. |
| 7:37 | Brian Shields: Good Morning. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this morning we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains which is now at 7,017 acres and 65% containtment. We're also talking about the agreement to avert a BART strike. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below. We're here until 7:00 p.m. so please jump on in! |
| 7:40 | Brian Shields: We're noticing lighter than normal traffic patterns on the roads. The latest pictures from the Bay Bridge show no backup at all. It appears a lot of people are avoiding the roads... perhaps they didn't get the word there would be no strike. |
| 7:46 | [Comment From johnny] Good morning Brian. So glad folks are returning home in Bonny Doon. |
| 7:47 | Brian Shields: Good morning Johnny. That is terrific news. About 500 evacuations remain in place in the Swanton area though |
| 7:49 | [Comment From johnny] Have you heard anything from Cal Fire about how this fire got started? |
| 7:49 | [Comment From Matt] Indeed, good news. |
| 7:49 | Brian Shields: I have not heard anything about a possible cause at this point. |
| 7:49 | Brian Shields: Good morning Matt |
| 7:49 | [Comment From Matt] Remember, If you or I didn't show up for work, we'd be fired. |
| 7:50 | Brian Shields: Well there is a difference between going on a legally recognized strike and just flat not showing up... |
| 7:53 | [Comment From Matt] I know. But many of us are irritated beyond belief. I'm worried about having a job now worried about how I'm going to get to work. Perhaps I'll become a train operator or ticket taker. |
| 7:53 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Morning Brian - I woke up to the news that some of the evacuees are able to go back to their home. How great is that. What is the containment now? |
| 7:54 | Brian Shields: Good morning Karen. We're still at 65% containment but the acreage has gone over 7,000. Bonny Doon residents can go back home with ID but 500 evacuations are still in effect in the Swanton area |
| 7:55 | [Comment From Matt] Great job to the firefighters. I am glad no injuries to them or the public. |
| 7:56 | Brian Shields: Complete agreement there Matt.. they are doing great work... and fortunately the weather has been cooperating so far. |
| 7:57 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Did the winds pick up yesterday, like they thought might happen? |
| 7:58 | Brian Shields: It wasn't as bad as feared.. and the shift wasn't as pronounced.. We are predicting a warm-up today across the entire region... |
| 7:59 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us at 8:00 a.m., Good Morning. We're here until 11:00 a.m. so please jump on in! |
| 7:59 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] No more heli coverage? |
| 7:59 | Brian Shields: I have not heard any calls for helis yet this morning. If anyone up there is hearing differently please let us know |
| 8:04 | Brian Shields: The big fire down in Santa Barbara County is now 75% contained. They're blaming a campfire at an illegal marijuana farm. |
| 8:04 | Brian Shields: More good news from last night.. the Corral fire in the Altamont Pass is now 100% contained.. |
| 8:05 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Brian - Kudos to you and your crew and to all the firefighters, for a job well done. Have there been any homes lost, or just the out buildings? |
| 8:05 | Brian Shields: Just the two out buildings.. and again thanks for the kudos to us but all of the credit should go to the heroic men and women out on the fire lines.. |
| 8:08 | Brian Shields: We're seeing helicopter coverage this morning showing thick fog remains in the area... and appears to be hiding even the smoke. |
| 8:10 | Brian Shields: Evelyn Taft is calling for a high of 88 in the fire zone this afternoon |
| 8:15 | Brian Shields: We invite you to join our conversation with your thoughts on what's happened with BART or on the Lockheed fire in the Santa Cruz mountains. Just enter your name or handle and comment in the slots below |
| 8:27 | Brian Shields: I have just posted the new weather forecast on the homepage.. |
| 8:34 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us at 8:30 a.m., Good Morning. | 8:39 | [Comment From Unions sucks] all the unions should be jail for stealing Millions! |
| 8:40 | Brian Shields: Good morning U.S. I hear you but some would argue fighting for their rights and their contracts isn't the same thing as stealing |
| 8:41 | [Comment From Unions sucks] How much did this cost American Millions! |
| 8:42 | Brian Shields: An actual strike might have cost millions. I doubt that much was spent since the strike was averted. We were talking here last night about the costs a lot of people incurred preparing for a strike including getting hotel rooms etc. |
| 8:42 | [Comment From Gilroy resident] Good morning Brian, cool here this morning. 58 degrees according to my outside therm. Foggy, with some odor of smoke. Fog seems to be thicker in all directions other than looking west. Is it foggy in the fire area? Supposed to be hot here this afternoon. So happy to hear the fire has been 65 % contained. |
| 8:43 | Brian Shields: Good morning G.R. Yes the fog is still covering the fire area and the winds are pretty close to calm. Evelyn Taft is predicting a high of 88 on the fire lines today |
| 8:43 | [Comment From Unions sucks] Look at your paycheck and Tell me that! and when you retired are you sure that you will get you money from the Unions? |
| 8:44 | Brian Shields: There are a lot of employer run pension plans that are shaky or worse as well.. |
| 8:44 | Brian Shields: We are still at 65% containment on the Lockheed fire but the acreage has grown to 7,017 |
| 8:45 | Brian Shields: Bonny Doon residents can return home with ID but about 500 evacuations remain in place in the Swanton area |
| 8:47 | [Comment From Unions sucks] just using a office in Oakland was 100 million and Linton Johnson should let them Strike it would gave the state Millions from the tolls! |
| 8:47 | [Comment From sharon] hello brian shields |
| 8:48 | Brian Shields: Good morning Sharon.. |
| 8:48 | [Comment From sharon] if this gets through |
| 8:48 | [Comment From sharon] i am going to talk about the bart strike and jesse hunt, the president of atu 155 |
| 8:49 | Brian Shields: Go for it Sharon |
| 8:49 | [Comment From Unions sucks] and the state is Hurting for money!!! |
| 8:49 | [Comment From sharon] i remember conversing with you last year |
| 8:49 | [Comment From sharon] i was not happy about bart going on strike |
| 8:49 | Brian Shields: They're not going on strike just to be clear |
| 8:49 | [Comment From sharon] cause every penny is needed |
| 8:50 | [Comment From sharon] and like the bart police the bart train handlers dont need to strike period |
| 8:50 | [Comment From sharon] i know they are not going on strike today but you never know |
| 8:51 | Brian Shields: True enough we're expecting a vote from ATU members sometime this week. If they say no again we could be back here this time next week |
| 8:51 | [Comment From Unions sucks] I was so Happy that Bart was going on strike because the state income would got more money! |
| 8:52 | Brian Shields: I know I keep saying this but I don't want someone to sign on and get the wrong idea... BART is not on strike... the trains are running this morning... and traffic on the bridges are pretty much non-existant |
| 8:52 | [Comment From sharon] bart dont need to go on strike union |
| 8:54 | [Comment From Unions sucks] tolls and parking! |
| 8:55 | [Comment From tvlh] Now, with everyone making different plans to get to work today (Monday) and BART didnt have their strick. I just wonder how much revenue was lost due to people making other plans... BART needs to get their ACT TOGETHER. |
| 8:55 | [Comment From sharon] i am not happy with jesse hunt, president of atu 155 |
| 8:55 | [Comment From Zaina] Bart employees, just like the Bart Police, most city Police and College and University employees SHOULD NOT be allowed to strike. I was a member of Local 1, PEU and we had a no strike clause. No one who has a job that hundreds of people depend on to get to work, etc, should be allowed to strike. This needs to be a law. I know we have enough laws already that bog us down, but this is too important to too many people to not be. |
| 8:56 | Brian Shields: We've heard that a lot Zaina... we had a comment earlier from an airline pilot who wonders why he's barred from striking but BART operators are not. Of course BART is governed under California law which is generally more pro-labor than federal law. |
| 8:56 | [Comment From Unions sucks] Unions take and never give back too the people their are helping! we the last time the Unions gave any worker a paycheck never happen hell look at the Fremont car plant the unions fault not helping to keep car company in california! |
| 8:58 | [Comment From Zaina] Looks like things need to change. |
| 9:00 | [Comment From Zaina] There are a lot of Unions who do give back to their constituents. They do a lot of good in areas where the employees could lose rights and jobs, etc. Unfortuneately, the big unions have lost their vision of unity and seem to not see those whom they are supposed to help anymore. |
| 9:00 | [Comment From Unions sucks] family that work in that plant for year are out of work and the Unions can care less they can go to texas and make money off those people but the poor people of california lose a Car plant that feeds Millions of famliy's why are the unions not help these Family's? |
| 9:01 | Brian Shields: I think it's unfair to say the unions could care less. They fight for their members in existing plants.. but as we've seen in the last 25 years in a lot of industries, unions can't keep plants open.. that's up to business owners. |
| 9:05 | [Comment From Zaina] I'm really happy I was part of Local One, PEU. They got us a wonderful contract, good wages, fair and comfortable working conditions. There are the smaller unions who do just what they are supposed to. Without unions, a lot of people are run over by management, and even with a union that is incompetent, employees are run all over. It isan't fair to slam all unions. These are hard times right now and it makes everyone feel threatened. But don't blame the unions. |
| 9:05 | [Comment From Martha] Brian, Good morning from Bonny Doon. |
| 9:05 | Brian Shields: Good morning Martha. How does it feel to have all of your neighbors able to return? |
| 9:05 | [Comment From Unions sucks] Unions said they would strike and Linton Johnson said if that happen they would been Fired! |
| 9:06 | Brian Shields: I never heard Linton say that... and it wouldn't have been true under Calfiornia law |
| 9:06 | [Comment From Martha] It feels great. No road blocks in effect this morning. I got home about 5:30 last night. Picked up all of our pets this morning. |
| 9:07 | Brian Shields: That's great news. There are about 500 people still in the evacuation zone near Swanton this morning... Is it really foggy where you are this morning Martha? |
| 9:07 | [Comment From Unions sucks] yes he sayed that they were under a contract and they were brech it that what he said! |
| 9:08 | Brian Shields: They weren't under contract. The contract had expired... |
| 9:09 | [Comment From Martha] It was very foggy and cool earlier this morning but has since cleared up. I live right around the corner from the Bonny Doon winery on lower Pine Flat road. |
| 9:09 | Brian Shields: Evelyn Taft is predicting a high of 88 today for the fire zone today... |
| 9:10 | [Comment From Martha] Still at 65% containment. Is that right? |
| 9:10 | Brian Shields: Yes but the acreage grew to 7,017 |
| 9:11 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks, Brian. I will leave my suitcase packed just in case. |
| 9:12 | Brian Shields: Probably a good idea but let's hope it won't be needed |
| 9:13 | [Comment From Guest] I don't consider myself a particularly well informed person, but even I was aware that the BART strike had been averted, at l about 7:00p.m. last night, at least for now. The people complaining that BART/union should reimburse them for hotel expenses are being ridiculous. I'm sure they had a good time in the city last night. They're the kind of people who say things like "just write it off', anyway. They should keep informed by watching KRON. |
| 9:13 | Brian Shields: Thanks guest. We had about triple our normal traffic on KRON4.com yesterday so there were some people checking in on things.. |
| 9:13 | [Comment From Martha] I saw a lot of firetrucks headed south on Hiway 1 earlier today. There was a caravan of them. Don't know whether or not they were headed to the command center in Watsonville or not. I waved as I drove by. |
| 9:14 | Brian Shields: Please tell any firefighters you see how much all of us appreciate the great work they've done on this fire.. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Guest] when will atu will vote |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: All we've heard is sometime this week |
| 9:16 | [Comment From Martha] I have given all of them that I see a thumb's up as well. Also goes for the highway patrol, sheriffs and all support staff. They have done an amazing job protecting our properties. |
| 9:16 | [Comment From Guest] thank you |
| 9:17 | Brian Shields: Good point Martha.. it's more than just the firefighters it's also the law enforcement people and the folks who are making sure the firefighters are fed and get the support they need. Let's also remember the families or all of these people who are in turn providing the next level of support. |
| 9:21 | [Comment From Unions sucks] like AC transit would take over on that scoop Bus are better when it come down to it it drops you off in front of the place unlike Bart where you have to walk block away! |
| 9:22 | [Comment From Guest] will you think that members from Atu will deny the contract |
| 9:22 | Brian Shields: Jesse Hunt the union president last night said he was confident the members would ratify this agreement but we'll have to wait to see. We could be in this same mess again this time next week. |
| 9:23 | [Comment From Unions sucks] If AC Transit strike then we all have Big issues !!! |
| 9:23 | Brian Shields: Well fortunately that's not on the agenda at least not anytime soon |
| 9:24 | Brian Shields: Although there's a story on the wire this morning that NFL players are expecting to be locked out for the 2011 season... and that would be pretty devastating for a lot of people too! |
| 9:25 | [Comment From Venessa] So far what I have read about what the contract changes will be is better. I wish people would do some investigating in the situation instead of just taking what the media or what BART management has to say. |
| 9:26 | Brian Shields: We haven't seen a lot of details of this new pact yet Venessa. Jesse Hunt says it addresses the concerns of his members. BART says it still changes the work rules.. so we'll have to wait and see how the rank and file react.. |
| 9:27 | [Comment From Unions sucks] I wish that Bart would just took the money that they agree too and not ask for more then what they should got! and cost people too pay for hotel room in the city and arould the bay area! |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Venessa] True...I'm going on what I'm hearing through the union this morning. I'm glad they were able to get back to the table this weekend and avoid a strike, at least for now. We'll see what happens once the contract is written up and what the wording is. |
| 9:32 | [Comment From susan davuis] Thank god they didnt have that wimp of a spokesperson Lyndon Johnson on last nite when they announced no strike. He is a nightmare. I was alright with bart untiil he said to talk to the train Operators. What was he thinking. I believe he needs to go back to school and learn how to be diplomatic. I was taking bart when someone did yell at the driver and i blame Johnson. Lets keep him off tv. |
| 9:32 | Brian Shields: LOL it's Linton Johnson.. Lyndon was the president.. |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Venessa] I agree with you Susan. That was a call out to people who are already angry and on the edge. It was a very poor move on his part and could have caused a lot of terrible confrontations. As it is, it caused some train operators to be threatened. |
| 9:34 | Brian Shields: Well we certainly don't condone threats or violence in any form.. |
| 9:36 | [Comment From susan davuis] sorry, but i and a lot of others still think he caused a lot of the fustrration with the peoploe. He always talked DOWN to people. I do not know him but all he was interested in was the salary drivers made. Wht did he not tell that he made over $150.00 and gave up his gym membership |
| 9:36 | [Comment From Unions sucks] a one year contract not a four year contract Mr.hunt shuld took the four year contract so this don't give the unions so much power! they are still at fault! |
| 9:36 | Brian Shields: I get the feeling there's nothing the unions could do that would please you U.S. |
| 9:36 | [Comment From Guest #2] g'morning... I may have missed the important info somewhere; I'm late to the discussion this a.m..... but-- didn't the Wall St. Journal guy mention that they now had a "one-year" contract? |
| 9:38 | Brian Shields: I was on hold during that interview for my hit after that.. but I haven't seen anything to confirm the one year contract term length... but I will continue to look |
| 9:38 | [Comment From Guest #2] Oh boy... I wonder what this means for next year... |
| 9:39 | Brian Shields: Ahh I think I know what folks are referring to... BART had imposed a one year contract with the new work rules.. that's what prompted the strike threat. That imposition was rescended last night after the talks came to agreement |
| 9:39 | [Comment From gr] Getting back to fire and roads and sfutt, on another note, regarding roadways, here are a couple of links I find somewhat usefeul for road info: cad.chp.ca.gov/ and for the bay area and www.sccroadclosure.org/ for Santa Cruz County |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Venessa] Is there any word on what caused the Lockheed fire? |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: I have not heard a cause for the Lockheed fire. |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: Gr. Thanks. The CAD is always a great resource for traffic info.. |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Martha] There were no road blocks on Pine Flat road this morning in Bonny Doon. |
| 9:42 | [Comment From Martin Odian] I am really glad to see that ATU Resolved there contract issues with Bart and that there was no Bart Strike |
| 9:42 | Brian Shields: Interesting Martha we were told they were still requiring ID to go up there...to keep the tourists out.. |
| 9:42 | Brian Shields: I think we're all relieved Martin |
| 9:42 | [Comment From Venessa] thanks...hope they can continue to make progress on getting the fire under control. |
| 9:43 | Brian Shields: 65% containment 7,017 acres. Evacuations lifted in Bonny Doon but 500 remain evacuated in the Swanton area |
| 9:44 | Brian Shields: Jesse Hunt is live on tv right now on KRON 4 |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Martin Odian] I hope ATU Approves the new Contract and does not do what they did with the first contract |
| 9:45 | [Comment From Martha] There were road blocks last night on Empire Grade road by Felton Empire and you had to show ID to get through. No blocks this morning at least on Pine Flat road by Bonny Doon road. |
| 9:47 | [Comment From Martin Odian] I hope ATU Approves the new Contract and does not do what they did with the first contract |
| 9:55 | [Comment From Victor] All this negative focus upon the Unions. Where it should be is on BART, and their unfair proposals and takeaways. I understand that they are in a financial crisis. So why not show by example, by cutting the lucrative salaries of the Administrators and Managers? |
| 9:56 | Brian Shields: Good morning Victor... and I think we have heard a lot of conversation about the decisions BART managers have made from their salaries and perks to their decision to build a $1 billion extension to the Oakland Airport.. |
| 9:59 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us at 10:00 a.m., Good Morning. We're here until 11:00 a.m. so please jump on in! |
| 10:03 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian -- re: the stationary view (Ustream) helicopter picture/vid (to the right).... have you found out WHERE this is shot? Is it Marin county, highway 1 above the bridge? or....??? |
| 10:05 | Brian Shields: Guest, that's our Walnut Creek tower cam... |
| 10:05 | [Comment From Jim in San Carlos] Bart union workers get up really early so that the commuters can get to their 9 to 5 cushy office job; now their spitting on them for striking. It's like beating your chaufer for asking for a rise. |
| 10:05 | Brian Shields: And just to be clear Jim.. BART workers were not asking for a raise in these negotiations |
| 10:05 | [Comment From Victor] Brian that may be so on this forum. But I am not hearing the conversation that you have stated on this mornings newscast. But I have seen more then once the Twitter from an individual who stated that maybe some professions should not have the power to strike. That is un-American my friend. |
| 10:06 | Brian Shields: Well Victor there are some professions that aren't legally allowed to strike including police and firefighters.. |
| 10:09 | [Comment From Patrick] Why in all the hoopla concerning the BART strike has no one even mentioned the looming closure of the Bay Bridge over Labor Day weekend? A strike during that event would have even more far-reaching consequences. |
| 10:09 | Brian Shields: We do have a special section on KRON4.com about the Labor Day bridge closure.. but you're right if we had been without the Bay Bridge and BART at the same time it would have been exponentially worse |
| 10:11 | [Comment From cynthia] you people are already earning a lot of money and you can still consider going on strike you are so mean there are so many people without vehicles and of course lost their jobs. i think bart should accept new employees who are not members of a union. |
| 10:12 | [Comment From Patrick] You are assuming that the ATU is going to ratify the contact; what happens if they don't? |
| 10:12 | Brian Shields: If they don't we're all back here talking strike sometime next week... but Jesse Hunt seems more confident of ratification this morning than he did a week ago |
| 10:12 | [Comment From Jim in San Carlos] Would that messed up your weekend plans? |
| 10:12 | Brian Shields: I was here all weekend anyway lol. |
| 10:15 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Jim in SanCarlos - not all BART riders are riding to theiry 'cushy office jobs'.... many people were upset because they were going to go to interviews, look for work.... lots of people's kids use this to go to schools, etc... Someone said last night that the biggest effect is on the "poor and disadvantaged" b/c they don't often have resources to find another option. |
| 10:15 | [Comment From Victor] Yes that is true Brian, example: BART PD. But they (police officers) know that coming into the job. You can't impose such a clause onto a group of Union workers who are grounded with contracts contrary to such a concept. |
| 10:16 | [Comment From cynthia] about the closure of the labor day bridge closure people have other ways to pass even if they have to pay. well if they don't bart should start hiring other people who are jobless i think they will be happy even if they just get half of your salary |
| 10:17 | Brian Shields: We did hear a lot of people saying the unemployed would happily take the jobs of the potential strikers. The problem with that is that it takes a minimum of 90 days of training to operate a BART train so by the time replacements were trained, the strike would have had to have been going on for three months... and that is unthinkable |
| 10:19 | [Comment From steve] then start retraining now so next time ..they can fire them and get people that would be happy to have what they already have |
| 10:19 | [Comment From Guest] 800 employees hold hostage of hundreds of thousands of people living and working in the Bay Area. |
| 10:21 | [Comment From Jim in San Carlos] Cynthia, the training would cost too much |
| 10:22 | Brian Shields: And if you trained them now with a union contract in effect, they would be union members in four years when this contract expires.. |
| 10:22 | [Comment From Jim in San Carlos] to Guest #2 - this just more Bart propaganda! |
| 10:25 | [Comment From Guest #2] @Jim.... huh? |
| 10:26 | [Comment From cynthia] well if that is the case then how come you still have train crashes? i believe eager people will learn faster if they are really wanted. i believe you can mange the trains electronically and i heard it is when the employee who shifted to manual then that was the time there was a colision. well what is it doing now. it is costing bart a lot more. also just get rid of the unions. people should just just fight for themselves if they care. only the union officers are fattening themselves with the union money |
| 10:26 | Brian Shields: For the record, the train crashes we've seen lately are on Muni not BART |
| 10:26 | [Comment From Guest #2] As far as i know, "public transit" is used by the public -- and not only by 'cushy office' jobbers. |
| 10:29 | [Comment From Jim in San Carlos] But they are the biggest whiners. |
| 10:29 | [Comment From Victor] I am seeing comments resulting from, in my opinion total ignorance. Such as "they can fire them and get people who would be happy to have what they already have." Right Steve....and I am sure BART will be more than happy of insuring that those salaries stay in place. After all that would be secured seeing that they will not have a contract, eh? |
| 10:32 | [Comment From Luz] BTW Where was Oakland Mayor Dellums during the talks? I saw Mayor Newsom was there, showing concern and responsibility as a leader. |
| 10:32 | Brian Shields: Good question. On the Oakland side of the Bay we saw Congresswoman Barbara Lee at the announcement |
| 10:33 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us at 10:30 a.m., Good Morning. We're here for another half hour until 11:00 a.m. so please jump on in! |
| 10:35 | [Comment From cynthia] so it is a public transport and office jobbers then think about them. people who cannot strike should be people who are nurses and people who are serving the public. we pay a lot for our fare and we are not earning a lot but we need the job |
| 10:37 | Brian Shields: It shows a little finger reaching down towards Swanton where 500 people remain under evacuation orders |
| 10:43 | Brian Shields: So don;t tell the boss but we seem to have come to a lull here so I'm going to go ahead and shut this down. Thanks to everyone who participated in our live blog this morning and please keep checking in with KRON 4 news and KRON4.com for the latest on the ratification vote and the situation with the fire. Have a great day. -- Brian |

| Sunday Evening BART Strike Averted | (08/16/2009) |
| 8:57 | Brian Shields: Welcome to KRON 4 and KRON4.com live coverage of the latest developments with a tentative agreement averting a threatened BART strike. You will be able to ride BART to work, school, or wherever you're going tomorrow. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields moderating our discussion. Enter your name or handle and thoughts in the spaces below. |
| 9:00 | [Comment From david] yo |
| 9:00 | Brian Shields: Hello David. What's your reaction to the BART Agreement? |
| 9:03 | [Comment From Flodu] I can't express how relieved I am at this. ATU had to have known the public wasn't with them this time. |
| 9:03 | Brian Shields: I think we're all relieved Flodu. Of course the ATU members still have to ratify in the coming week but it does mean tomorrow won't be a nightmare |
| 9:04 | [Comment From JON] SO BART MANAGEMENT GAVE IT...WHY THEY HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE |
| 9:04 | Brian Shields: I think it's too soon to tell which side gave in... but I do think the looming strike motivated both sides.. |
| 9:05 | [Comment From JON] THATS GOOD THEN |
| 9:06 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us, the good news is no BART strike tomorrow... we want to know what you think.. join our conversation |
| 9:06 | [Comment From Dude] I am pretty sure management did not cave in. |
| 9:07 | Brian Shields: From what we were hearing earlier in the day, it appears the focus was on reaching a specified amount of cuts. Speculating here but perhaps they found other ways to save money than the work rule changes ATU was so opposed to. |
| 9:07 | [Comment From HB] I'd like to hear how much it cost passengers to prepare for the strike |
| 9:07 | Brian Shields: That's an excellent question HB. How much do you think it's cost you? |
| 9:08 | [Comment From Bob] Bart employees make too much money |
| 9:08 | [Comment From Dude] Doubt it, they probably took the same options SEIU and AFSCME took to save thier holidays and pensions. |
| 9:08 | [Comment From DICK] How could you believe that. Management has caved in every time in the past. There people are underworked and overpaid |
| 9:09 | [Comment From Guest #2] Hi Brian... (looks like the outlandish hopes & prayers -- that BART wouldn't strike and the Lockheed fire would start to behave and calm down -- have come true!! How cool is THAT! |
| 9:10 | Brian Shields: Vevy cool my friend |
| 9:10 | [Comment From Bob] most of the station agents make 100k a yr., mostly from overtime. only a high school diploma required. wow! where do i sign up? |
| 9:11 | [Comment From HB] Well - I'm not a regular BART passenger but I can reasonably calculate how much gas it would cost in traffic if the strike were prolonged. (just an off-subject comment) I don't mean to change the subject |
| 9:11 | [Comment From Bob] let them strike! im sure their positions will be easily filled with all the unemployed folks out there |
| 9:12 | Brian Shields: Well these aren't garbage workers like the strike we saw in Oakland a couple of years ago. It takes a minimum of 90 days to train an operator of a BART train |
| 9:13 | [Comment From Dude] ATU made the public suffer for a week, when they could have had the same deal SEIU and AFSCME took last week. |
| 9:13 | [Comment From Bob] why dont they just more employees to cut down on overtime pay. |
| 9:13 | Brian Shields: Dude, let's wait and see if this is the same deal SEIU and AFSCME took last week... and specifically what the new work rules will be |
| 9:14 | [Comment From Guest #2] Re: BART -- I heard on some bews coverage today that the amount of public outrage (especially fm those using BART to seek employment, or who are newly employed) helped to take some steam outta the negotiation stamina - especially since the other 2 unions okayed their deals with less fuss (and less pain on the public) |
| 9:14 | Brian Shields: There was also apparently a lot of political pressure at the last minute today. Gavin Newsom and Barbara Lee showed up at the end for the news conference.. although it remains unclear exactly what role they took in reaching a resolution |
| 9:14 | [Comment From Dave] Is the strike really going to be averted? I trust that the ATU members will again reject the offer. |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: Well either way Dave, there won't be a strike tomorrow which is a relief for a lot of people. |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: Jesse Hunt from the ATU told Christine Connolly at the top of our 9pm show that he thinks this deal will be ratified.. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Dude] Mark my words, I just hope Jessie actually tries to sell the deal this time. He never fully backed the last deal. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Dave] I agree. No strike tomorrow |
| 9:17 | [Comment From Dave] Do we know when the ATU members will be voting on the new deal? |
| 9:17 | Brian Shields: All they said was within the next week.. |
| 9:17 | [Comment From Dude] Just glad I get to go to work tomorrow. |
| 9:18 | Brian Shields: Just glad I don't have to be at work at 4:00 a.m. ;) |
| 9:18 | [Comment From Guest #2] Hmmm... Labor Day weekend is coming up... and Bay Bridge closures at the same time, right? Let's hope that the ATU folks mellow out & ratify!! |
| 9:18 | [Comment From Dudette] No Strike? Bummer! I was hoping for a strike. |
| 9:18 | Brian Shields: You're kidding right? |
| 9:18 | [Comment From Dude] Lol. I hear that |
| 9:19 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian -- re: "don't have to be at work at 4am" -- I was just thinking that this surely takes a lot of overload off of you, and Kimmie too!! |
| 9:20 | Brian Shields: You know in the news business it's always better when something is happening that when nothing is going on... but in this case life will be so much better for hundreds of thousands of people tomorrow we're glad for that |
| 9:20 | [Comment From Guest] i see how they are trying to make their point across by wanting to go on strike but i feel as though it is quite selfish because if they were to go on strike hundreds of thousands of people would have a big problem commuting to school or work. |
| 9:20 | [Comment From Dudette] Nah im serious. I need another reason to ride my bike to work. |
| 9:21 | [Comment From Guest #2] One SF hotel (not sure which one) had offered $99/night rate for Mon-Thurs, so people could stay for their work week. They also said that, if the strike was averted, they would still honor the reservations that had been made at that rate. |
| 9:21 | Brian Shields: We did a story on a hotel in Burlingame that was doing that in our 5pm show |
| 9:21 | [Comment From G.S.] I just hope the union ratifies the contract. The strike threat still looms all over the bay area. Considering the current state of the economy in California, it would be in the best interest of the ATU members to ratify the contract. |
| 9:21 | [Comment From Dude] #2 I hope so also, but there has been a lot of infighting amongst ATU over this contract. |
| 9:22 | [Comment From HB] That's my point and question - How much will it cost us here to prepare for the strike? So far it has cost me at $200 in prep. I'm not rich. |
| 9:24 | [Comment From sd] so true on that one |
| 9:24 | [Comment From Guest #2] @HB - yeah, it's cost you $200 to *not* strike... would've been way higher if there'd been a strike, chances are. |
| 9:24 | [Comment From HB] How are the BART workers able to justify cost-effectiveness for a strike? |
| 9:25 | Brian Shields: Well first just to make it clear there's not going to be a strike at least not tomorrow. Second they would say that striking would be more cost effective than taking effective pay cuts for four years.. |
| 9:25 | [Comment From G.S.] BART serves more than just the purpose of shuttling people to and back from work, it's how some people go for interviews to try to get work. It also serves families who send their children to school using BART. I do not think we should all be celebrating just yet. |
| 9:25 | [Comment From HB] Amen to all |
| 9:25 | [Comment From Dude] I would have cost me a days pay for every day since I would have had to honor thier picket line. |
| 9:25 | Brian Shields: Dude I take it you're in seiu or afscme? |
| 9:25 | [Comment From Alicia] I am glad they averted it. I am sick of hearing about the negotiations every 3 or 4 years. The unions always sound greedy and as an outsider I have no way of knowing the reality of the situation. I just know that to be given a raise every year ( as in previous years) is really annoying. Has anyone actually dealt with the majority of the station agents? They are generally rude, slow and ineffective. If I behaved that way I wouldn't be able to keep my job much less get a raise for it. On the other hand no raise for the next 4 years would have stunk too. |
| 9:26 | [Comment From Dude] SEIU |
| 9:27 | Brian Shields: I got in a little hot water the other day on this blog when I said I had never met a friendly station agent. I'm not taking sides on who is right or wrong in the talks but in my personal experience, I have gotten nothing but attitude and rudeness from BART station agents.. |
| 9:27 | [Comment From mp] So is there going to be a strike? |
| 9:27 | Brian Shields: No MP. There will not be a strike tomorrow. A tentative contract agreement has been reached |
| 9:27 | [Comment From Guest #2] This surely isn't the time - and isn't the political & financial climate - to support a transportation strike! Oh - and not to mention - not the Climate-Change and energy-use-reduction climate either. It did *not* help their cause that two other related unions okayed their contrac |
| 9:28 | Brian Shields: So Dude, as an SEIU member, I'm interested in your thoughts on ATU's work rules.. |
| 9:28 | [Comment From HB] Hello SEIU - Now we're on a different level. How much would it cost you to go on strike? |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Dude] Lol, they aren't even nice to us. |
| 9:28 | [Comment From mp] Thank god! |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Alicia] You notice I said majority, not all! :) |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] What do BART salaries look like...are they underpaid? Off their job posting Website: |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] "Benefits include the renowned CalPers pension, excellent medical, vision, and dental coverage, supplemental insurances, excellent paid holidays and vacation, as well as two investment programs, one of which is entirely funded by BART on your behalf. BART also saves you money in your paycheck because no deductions are made for Social Security."

| 9:29 | Brian Shields: The Contra Costa Times website had a great database on BART salaries |
| 9:29 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian -- you must be tired, asking for more "hot water" about your station-agent viewpoint! |
| 9:29 | [Comment From BZ] I hope they are giving up some of the work rules that cause huge amounts of OT! |
| 9:29 | [Comment From joe] did anyone see the scathing column in the CC Times today about what BART employees benefits are? |
| 9:30 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] thanks |
| 9:30 | [Comment From Dude] Most of them make more than me due to overtime rules. And most of us were not aware of these rules until now. |
| 9:30 | Brian Shields: Really? That's interesting Dude... |
| 9:31 | [Comment From G.S.] Let us all hope this contract is approved especially with the impending closure of the SF Bay Bridge during the Labor Day weekend. |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Alicia] One thing I have noticed about the news coverage of the strike is that they mention all of the alternate ways to get in to The City, but for the ones that have to drive or car pool, no one mentioned anything about the parking for all of those extra vehicles. I would think there would not be enough. Anyone have any ideas on that? |
| 9:31 | [Comment From BZ] There were articles in every newspaper I think. You can work for BART with just a highschool diploma and make well over $100,000 a year. |
| 9:31 | Brian Shields: Good point Alicia. It's hard to find parking in the City on a normal day |
| 9:31 | [Comment From joe] is it true that they do not pay anything for their med + dent benefits? |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Dude] It's all there in that link. Look at the jobs like "Transit Vehicle Mechanic", then compare that to a "Train Opperator". Our base salary is higher, but the Train Opperators make a killing in OT. |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Alicia] Well clearly we all missed the boat by not applying for any of those jobs at BART. |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] BART employees get the lucrative CalPERs pension plan |
| 9:32 | Brian Shields: Calpers is for all California Public Employees... |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] their salaries do not include any social security withdrawals. |
| 9:32 | [Comment From BZ] BART seems to pay for everything for their employees! Including most of their medical and dental. |
| 9:33 | Brian Shields: Stand by, I'll be going on tv in a moment to promote this blog |
| 9:34 | [Comment From dude] what else do they this days??? |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Guest #2] Ooo... bad PR ensues... the ATU could have looked very very gracious if the headlines had read that "in cooperation with the budget constraints in today's economy, union members vote to accept a contract that disallows their overtime work rules" -- or something like that. Instead, they not only look terribly greedy, but their heretofore relatively-unknown overtime allowances are now public (and companion unions') knowledge! |
| 9:34 | [Comment From dude] they should very lucky to have a job on this economy with great benefits/salary.. |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Alicia] I just wish my employer would stop telling me that I should be thankful I have a job and to be happy that I work 60 hour work weeks without OT because I am on Salary. |
| 9:37 | [Comment From BZ] It's unfortunate in this economy with layoffs, furloughs, etc. that the members of this union think they can continue to be greedy. I'm tired of paying taxes for workers like this! |
| 9:38 | [Comment From Guest #2] Good spot, Brian!! |
| 9:38 | Brian Shields: Thanks... |
| 9:38 | Brian Shields: I'm also multi-tasking here. I just dropped the video from this afternoon's news conference in. It will be ready within the next couple of minutes |
| 9:39 | [Comment From dude] that's right Iam tired of paying taxes.. greedy greedy !! sick of it.. that's over.. |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Angel] Hi Brian. It's Reporter Angel Cardenas from KXTV News10 Sacramento. When you were here I was an Engineer. You might not remember me. Anyhow....thank godness there has been a tentative agreement reached. It would have been a crazy day reporting traffic. |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: Sure I remember you Angel. (FYI, I used to be Morning Exec. Producer at News 10 in Sacramento) . Hey I was due in here at 4am to live blog if there had been a strike so I'm a bit relieved too. Glad to see you're on the air up there. Say hello for me to all my old friends in that newsroom |
| 9:40 | [Comment From G.S.] Keep in mind everyone, we are not out of the woods yet as the ATU members still have to vote on this and we could be back here in a week talking about a potential strike again |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: Let's hope not G.S. but you are of course right |
| 9:40 | [Comment From HB] SEIU - I just checked that web site about the salaries. Your employer is right. You should be glad you have such a job. Look around you. I don't know whether or not you are a greedy person- that's none of my business -I just think that you are one that should be thankful. Is a strike cost effective for you? |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Guest #2] Where did this Bogus Brian (van Aiken, the weather dude) come from??? He needs to get a nickname; so WE don't get you 2 confused!! |
| 9:41 | Brian Shields: You can remember me by my initials ;) |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Kenny] BART unions haven't gained any friends among the ridership... they've played a pointless game and the public is the loser. In these economic times we all (including the union members) should be ready to sacrifice until times are better. |
| 9:41 | [Comment From HB] Have good evening all - time to go now. |
| 9:41 | Brian Shields: Thanks for your contributions HB |
| 9:41 | [Comment From G.S.] I would still suggest commuters to look into alternative modes of transit in case ATU rejects this tenative contract agreement. |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] The poor and working class of our community as the most dependent on public transportation. A strike would hurt them the most. |
| 9:41 | Brian Shields: No question about that Hugh |
| 9:42 | [Comment From Alicia] Next week I will just take vacation until this thing is over. |
| 9:42 | Brian Shields: It's over Alicia. Vacation is off. Bart will be running tomorrow. Sorry |
| 9:42 | [Comment From BZ] Too bad the public can't strike against the union! |
| 9:42 | [Comment From Tommi] Brian, I have had an issue with the reports of what the train operators salaries are - I know for a fact that they are not as high as reported - I have an end of year pay stub from one who is at the highest end to prove it in fact |
| 9:43 | Brian Shields: Well Tommi, those numbers included benefits which aren't reflected on a pay stub. I was talking earlier with Da Lin about this... I have no idea what I make on that basis since I have no idea the monetary value of what KRON pays for my health care and other benefits |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Charlie] ATU is too greedy. Even strike is averted, a lot of money is spent to prepare for the strike. It is better to fire all ATU members in the first place so that they can lern how blessed they are to have high compensation while many people are unemployed. |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Dude] I am thankful, that's why we settled. I came to BART for 2 reasons, job security and benefits. I could have made a lot more in private industry. |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] There are a lot of 6 figure salaries on the contra costa website. It's hard to feel sympathetic to them. I've been unemployed for a year now from the Hedge Fund business. I would love one of their salaries...plus the benefits |
| 9:43 | [Comment From BZ] Paychecks are just a part of the equation. Benefits probably add another 40-50%, especially those for BART employees. |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Tommi] actually that end of year pay stub DOES show benies as well |
| 9:44 | Brian Shields: Does it show the monetary value of the employer contributions? mine shows the value of what I contributed but not what KRON contributes |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Kenny] I'd like to see KRON (and all the other news stations) post online and report on the air with the email addresses that the public can use to reach the unions and BART management. It seems to me the input from the public has been way too limited. |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Ginonsf] SHAME ON YOU BART FOR PUTTING COMMUTERS THROUGH THIS CAIOUS |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Guest #2] Hmmm.... I think I remember the last strike caused many commuters to change their go-to-work habits. Some purchased cars; some enacted "telecommuting" options on a long-term basis. BART lost a lot of ridership for quite a while (if my memory serves me)... That's not a good-karma long-term consequence. Especially since (as Hugh Hoang said) it hits the poor & needy a lot harder than others. |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Tommi] and again, the numbers shown on the news are not in line with what i have seen |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Tommi] yes Brian it does |
| 9:46 | [Comment From Ginonsf] BE GREATFUL FORWHAT YOU HAVE... |
| 9:46 | [Comment From Tommi] I am wondering if the middle management people - who at one point were not part of the union - are now part of the ATU and that their salaries are being figured in to that average perhaps |
| 9:46 | Brian Shields: Most of those middle managers are now in afscme |
| 9:46 | [Comment From Tommi] if so, that would make a hugh difference because I know that the middle management people earn quite a bit more than train operators do |
| 9:47 | Brian Shields: it was those middle managers who kept the system operating during the 90 day strike in 1979. Since they're now afscme, they weren't available to do that this time |
| 9:47 | [Comment From Tommi] and if the others around the nation are only reporting train operators salaries - then you are not comparing apples to apples |
| 9:47 | [Comment From Tommi] then something still isn't ringing right |
| 9:49 | [Comment From Tommi] correct - which makes it that much worse a situation for a strike to occur |
| 9:49 | [Comment From Dude] Well I can vouch for the CC times database. My salary shows up when I type in my name. |
| 9:49 | [Comment From Tommi] is the public also aware that if they strike - they receive NOTHING during that time - there is no strike pay for the workers |
| 9:49 | Brian Shields: They have a listing for "Dude"? lol. |
| 9:49 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] 20% of BART employees make more than 100k. The benefits are unbelievable...the pension, no deductions for social security. |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Tommi] I think though there was a definite issue in how the ATU put forth the offer to its workers - BART management is correct that the offer wasn't sold to its members well - if at all. |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Charlie] There is the seperate figure for compensation for BART custodians. They earn more than $90K including benefit. This us much much higher than a custodian of a private company earns. |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] This might be good for me... maybe consider a career transitions from the Hedge Fund industry to the public transportation industry |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Dude] Lol. I see you moonlight as a comedian. |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Tommi] Hugh - there are no deductions for SS because of the pension |
| 9:50 | Brian Shields: A starving one no doubt Dude.. |
| 9:51 | [Comment From G.S.] This is something that I would like to hear Gary Radnich's Point of View on during this week's segments on KRON TV. |
| 9:51 | Brian Shields: I will pass that on to Gary and his producer |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Tommi] which means that for years these employees have had ZERO going into SS - and if you take away the pension - that leaves them with NOTHING |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] Wish I knew this when I got out of college.... |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] IC with the social security...but that means the take home income is much higher than a "normal |
| 9:52 | [Comment From Dude] No matter what they say, it would cost BART more money if we were on Social Security. Thier contribution would be higher. |
| 9:52 | [Comment From mc] Now if they get rid of Linton Johnson thell save even more money and get rid of a liar |
| 9:53 | Brian Shields: Just remember it's Linton's job to reflect management's positions. I don't think we can blame him if we don't like those management decisions. |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] but they get the lucrative CalPers pension. We use to manage some of the CalPers pension at my old firm |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Tommi] Dude - that is correct, so BART Mgmt has been getting the better deal as well all along - and now they want to rid themselve of that future obligation |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Dude] mc - I second that. I'd be surprised if he is still employed after this. |
| 9:54 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] but pension pay something like 80% of your average 5 highest year salary |
| 9:54 | [Comment From Brian Trombetta] Special Thanks to The Channel 4 News at KRON for keeping us updated on the latest BART News. KRON will be celebrating 60 years as the Leader in bringing the very best coverage of all local and national news - just another fine example of Channel 4 Working 4 you ! |
| 9:54 | [Comment From G.S.] Part of the reason I'd like to hear from Gary about it is given that some people want to get away from their troubles by going to say a concert or ball game and they not have been able to with a BART strike. The traffic to go such events would have been a nightmare on Monday |
| 9:54 | Brian Shields: Thanks Brian. You should write promos for us. |
| 9:54 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Charlie -- Though I agree with most of this salaries-are-outrageous sentiment... as far as Custodians, I think that a lot of horrible, disgusting - even toxic - debris is left on the trains from a segment of the "Riding Public". That salary may not be out of whack!! (i wouldn't want the job, i don't think!) |
| 9:55 | Brian Shields: There are some awfully nasty BART trains out there. |
| 9:55 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] so I see why they are pushing for a consistent salary increase...that's where the real money is made, the pension |
| 9:55 | Brian Shields: Well just to be clear, they were not pushing for a salary increase this year... it was about protecting work rules that give them overtime. |
| 9:55 | [Comment From Dude] #2 - Like puke on a train. or as we say a "Hot Lunch". |
| 9:55 | [Comment From Tommi] the other unions were given something in their contracts ATU was not |
| 9:56 | Brian Shields: Ooo Dude |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] why was the strike set for Monday...not like Saturday? Less impact to the public |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Tommi] That to me is a legitimate gripe |
| 9:56 | Brian Shields: Alright folks, another two or three minutes and we're going to shut this down. I have a lot of work to do to get ready for the morning... although I don't have to be back at 4am after all. Any final thoughts? |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Tommi] it was set for Monday to give everyone time to prepare - to find other options to get to work, etc. |
| 9:57 | [Comment From Dude] That's what we call it, when a utility hears that term they cringe. |
| 9:57 | [Comment From Guest #2] Another possible point.... As has been reported, civil service employees usually don't contribute to social security -- their "pension" is in the PERS (Public Employees Retirement System). I *think* I heard that those funds lost a WHOLE BUNCH in the recent Stock Market fiascos! |
| 9:57 | [Comment From mc] When you complete the blogging about the BART issue, could you please start one on the Kaiser layoffs- They are posting that they made a big profit last year and then turn around and lay off 3500 employees. |
| 9:57 | [Comment From G.S.] Could you imagine this conversation after the labor day holiday if BART went on strike the tuesday after labor day? |
| 9:57 | [Comment From Dude] Tommi- ATU had the option to get what we got but they were no willing ot give up anything. |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Tommi] they did Guest |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Tommi] still might occur GS |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] yes, when the pension funds lose money, the state kicks in the difference to gaurentee their salaries |
| 9:58 | Brian Shields: BTW, if you want to watch the complete news conference from BART and ATU from tonight, refresh this page or the front page.. it's in the video player below |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Dude -- I think 'puke' is t least of the problems -- there's other bodily stuffs, including blood -- a nd castoff -uh- "love gloves'...? |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Hugh Hoang] why do you think the state is bankrupt right now. |
| 9:59 | [Comment From JM] -- Happy our freeways will not be gridlocked tomorrow!!! |
| 9:59 | Brian Shields: Total agreement JM |
| 9:59 | [Comment From Tommi] Hugh - this State, the one which is going Bankrupt and offering vouchers |
| 9:59 | [Comment From G.S.] it still could, that would be a major disaster as more people will have returned from their vacations |
| 9:59 | [Comment From Dude] #2 - I was trying to be civil. lol |
| 10:00 | [Comment From Tommi] actually Hugh its a lot more than just PERS which did it to this State |
| 10:00 | [Comment From Tommi] but that is a whole nother discussion isn't it? |
| 10:00 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Dude.... so am I! lol |
| 10:00 | Brian Shields: That it is.. so we'll leave it at that. Thanks to everyone who participated and get some rest before heading to work tomorrow.
Good night |
| 10:00 |

| Sunday Morning BART and Wildfires | (08/16/2009) |
| 8:04 | Brian Shields: Good morning and welcome to KRON4 coverage of BART and the California Wildfires. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields |
| 8:05 | Brian Shields: We have an update from the Lockheed fire from Caltrans. We're now up to 50% containment... and the fire has not grown from the last update at 6,843 acres |
| 8:06 | Brian Shields: Please join our conversation just enter your name or handle and comment below |
| 8:11 | [Comment From Johnny] Good morning Brian. Glad you're here again this Sunday. Are there any |
| 8:11 | [Comment From Mark] Is this based on the morning update, Brian, or might they yet be providing new information on how it went last night and when they expect full containment? |
| 8:12 | Brian Shields: Good morning. Calfire's web site has the 50% containment figure |
| 8:12 | [Comment From Johnny] Are there any updates on the fire map? |
| 8:12 | Brian Shields: They have not posted a new map yet today. The one they put out yesterday was so tiny it was hard to see details. |
| 8:13 | Brian Shields: Also good news this morning out of the Corral fire in the Altamont Pass. That's now 85% contained. |
| 8:13 | Brian Shields: Good morning Al! |
| 8:14 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] Good Morning Brian! |
| 8:14 | Brian Shields: Oops it helps if I post your Good Morning before replying with my own |
| 8:14 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] what day is it exactly? Been up reporting for my media outlet all night. |
| 8:15 | Brian Shields: We are officially at Sunday lol |
| 8:15 | Brian Shields: What new did you find overnight? |
| 8:16 | [Comment From Mark] The improvement on the Corral fire is good news all around, as it means that additional air resources could become available for the Lockheed fire if it starts to move again. |
| 8:17 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] ive been up since saturday at noon. Weird schedules. Sunday is always a very slow morning, we are following a building collapse in india from a few hours ago, turned out well though. |
| 8:18 | Brian Shields: Also for those interested in the BART talks. The two sides will get back together at 11 a.m. If they don't come to an agreement today, I'll be back here at 4am tomorrow blogging the strike. |
| 8:18 | [Comment From Mark] I am hearing the helicopters flying over Boulder Creek right now on their way back to take up their duties dropping water on the fire. |
| 8:19 | Brian Shields: That's encouraging. What's the air quality like where you are Mark? |
| 8:20 | [Comment From Martha] Good morning, Brian. It's foggy in Ben Lomond. Cool and foggy. |
| 8:20 | Brian Shields: Good morning Martha and welcome back.... |
| 8:21 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] tommorow morning, KRON will be my first source for the traffic conditions with the strike if BART cant work anything out today. |
| 8:21 | [Comment From Martha] Glad to see everyone here. 50% containment. Wow! |
| 8:22 | Brian Shields: What's even better is the 50% with no spread. Same acreage as last night |
| 8:22 | Brian Shields: Thanks Al... |
| 8:22 | [Comment From Mark] It's still a little hard to tell, Brian, as the sun is just coming up above the trees, but there is no smell of smoke and the sky is quite blue as long as you look away from the sun. I don't see the fog that Martha reports, but the morning is cool. My guess is that we had no air movement in this direction overnight because the temperatures were so low. |
| 8:22 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] Wow. 50% is great. |
| 8:22 | Brian Shields: Indeed it is... |
| 8:23 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] To all, We have been away in Sonoma since before the fire started and this group (some of whom I know) have been a great source of information and comfort. |
| 8:24 | Brian Shields: We're glad you're safe J&S |
| 8:24 | [Comment From Paul] any update on whether BART is striking tomorrow ? |
| 8:24 | Brian Shields: Good morning Paul. The strike is still on for now. BART and the ATU talked for about five hours yesterday... and they're due back at 11am today. |
| 8:26 | Brian Shields: ATU was offering to delay the strike if BART would rescend the imposition of new work rules. BART was refusing going into the talks.. obviously we don't know what happened at the table yesterday but the fact that they were in there for five hours means they obviously had something to discuss |
| 8:26 | [Comment From Paul] was any head way made..or are they still stuck ? |
| 8:27 | [Comment From Paul] ok..thanks Brian... |
| 8:27 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] Okay Brian, been up for way too long, gonna go try to get some rest. Will try to be here tommorow morning for the BART blog. Thanks for KRON! You make my week. |
| 8:27 | Brian Shields: Take care of yourself Al. Thanks for stopping by |
| 8:28 | [Comment From Martha] I hear the helicopters flying over Ben Lomond as well. Can't see them, but I can sure hear them. |
| 8:28 | Brian Shields: It's a great sound. We know they're making a difference |
| 8:32 | Brian Shields: At 8:30 if you're just joining us, this is KRON 4 live blogging coverage of the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the last day of talks before a possible BART Strike. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields Please join our conversation just enter your name or handle and comment below |
| 8:32 | [Comment From Mark] I see that the "last update" time on the CalFire incident report was 7 a.m., Brian. Do you know if there was an 8 a.m. update in the form of a press conference, as usual? I have seen no reference to it yet. |
| 8:33 | Brian Shields: I have not seen anything beyond the 7am update. It was well later in the morning yesterday before they posted the map |
| 8:36 | [Comment From Mark] I see that they have now posted "4 injuries". Any word on that? |
| 8:36 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] The fire is now 50% contained as of this morning... |
| 8:37 | [Comment From Pete] Brian, I was not aware of your blog until I saw the twitter "tweet.". Kudos for providing a timely and informative news source for Bay Area residents. |
| 8:37 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] I know that 2 had minor injuries. One had a injury to his hand and one had breathing problems. |
| 8:37 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that update Annie. Welcome to our conversation Pete |
| 8:37 | [Comment From Cory Montanez] CAL Fire are idiots. Once you leave the mountain you won't be allowed to return...It's not even mandatory where I live.. |
| 8:38 | Brian Shields: Well Cory, they have bigger priorities right now that coordinating a lot of civilian traffic in and out. I would just say please be sure to get out in plenty of time if you're property is threatened. Your safety is the most important thing |
| 8:38 | [Comment From Sophia] Just want to say BIG thanks for this forum. We are at the foggy harbor waiting to go home to BD. Just like the Martin fire this has been a great source of info. Right on! |
| 8:39 | Brian Shields: Thank you Sophia... the power of this forum is the information you guys are sharing with each other. |
| 8:39 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] Thank you. |
| 8:40 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] I have to give props to Bonny Doon Fire Department for doing such a great job with this fire. It's great to have them up here. |
| 8:40 | [Comment From Martha] I was glued to this forum last year when we evacuated in the Martin fire. Now 14 months later, here we are again. Can't imagine being without the forum. |
| 8:40 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] I just heard that all 4 injuries were minor and they returned to duty |
| 8:41 | Brian Shields: That's great information Annie. |
| 8:41 | Brian Shields: Listening to the Calfire channel right now they're trying to manage traffic is the last group comes off the fire lines and they try to get reinforcements in there |
| 8:41 | [Comment From Sophia] Well Cory those "idiots" are saving our ass. How many fiat conflagarations have you managed? Move to the city if you don't like it. |
| 8:42 | Brian Shields: Okay folks this is a stressful situation for everyone and turning on each other won't help. I do have to say Calfire does a great job of communicating in a very difficult environment.... and the heroes are the men and women on the fire lines |
| 8:42 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] wow... |
| 8:43 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks Brian for your level headed comments. |
| 8:43 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] My husband is one of those out fighting the fire... |
| 8:43 | [Comment From Shelly] Did you guys get any footage of all the helicopters working the fire off hwy 1 yesterday? It was an amazing sight to see! They were all working is such close quarters in some very strong winds. |
| 8:43 | Brian Shields: I don;t think we did get that video Shelly.. but I will make a note for our VJ's out there today |
| 8:44 | Brian Shields: Annie please let your husband know how much we all appreciate his hard work to protect the rest of us |
| 8:44 | [Comment From Elaine] Just want to say thanks from Colorado for this live thread. I have family and friends at Molino Creek Farm. Appreciate the real-time news and send good thoughts for safety to all there, and thanks to the courageous firefighters. |
| 8:48 | [Comment From ken] Good morning. I live in Bonny Doon at the top of Pine Flat and would like to know when residents/families are allowed in. Also, what arrangements have been made for mail? Has it been delivered or is there some central P.O where it can be retrieved. I'm expecting some medications. Good job to all and thanks!! |
| 8:49 | [Comment From Martha] Is there any news (or even rumors..) on when we will get to return to our homes? I registered with the sheriff's command center yesterday and supposedly they will be letting us know. |
| 8:49 | Brian Shields: Good morning Ken. I would check with the local postmaster tomorrow. My guess is that they will hold your mail until it can be delivered |
| 8:49 | [Comment From Shelly] The helicopters were picking water up from Rancho Del Oso right along the Hwy edge. There would be one filling one waiting and one flying off. The fire was getting pretty close to Big Creek. None of the maps I have seen show how close to the coast it was. |
| 8:50 | Brian Shields: That's definitely news to us. We had not seen it moving that close to Hwy 1 or the ocean.. |
| 8:50 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] Ken- I talked to CAL FIRE this morning and they were waiting for a new update. They said to call back in an hour. Martha where do you live? |
| 8:51 | [Comment From Annie Rodmo] I heard that mail is at the Santa cruz Post Office. You can go there and get it but at this point if you go you can't get back in |
| 8:51 | [Comment From Martha] Ken: I heard that they are holding our mail or you can pick it up at the main Post Office by the clock tower in Santa Cruz. I live at lower Pine Flat. |
| 8:52 | [Comment From Guest] There were visable flames from the Hwy. |
| 8:52 | [Comment From Guest] how is the traffic going down into Santa Cruz? |
| 8:52 | [Comment From ken] Thank you Martha. |
| 8:54 | Brian Shields: Another great resource to follow traffic info across the region is at http://cad.chp.ca.gov/ just choose the Bay Area dropdown |
| 8:57 | [Comment From Martha] Annie: I live right around the corner from the tasting room, on lower Pine Flat road, near the corner of Martin and Pine Flat. |
| 8:58 | [Comment From Gilroy resident] I don't live in the area, but have concerns as I have friends who do. Thank you so much for this source of information. Brian and all the contributors. |
| 9:03 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] I wish they would release the larger version of the maps. :\ But it does look like good news in general. |
| 9:04 | Brian Shields: I've blown up the image. It's pixilated a bit but you can see the outlines |
| 9:04 | |
| 9:04 | [Comment From Mark] Unfortunately, Brian, the map is too low-resolution to make out much detail. Can you read the time of issue at the upper right on the version you are looking at? |
| 9:05 | Brian Shields: it looks like it says 06:00 hours.. 6am. But that's based on my squinting ability |
| 9:07 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] that's my best guess as well. |
| 9:08 | Brian Shields: The head of the BART board is on the KRON 4 Morning News this morning... he's sounding somewhat optimistic that a strike might be averted. |
| 9:09 | [Comment From Pamela] Good morning. Could you identify on the map where the Lockheed buildings are located. My husbands strike team has been protecting these highly classified buildings. |
| 9:10 | Brian Shields: If they're that classified, I wouldn't know where they are. Can anyone help Pamela? In any case Pamela, please let your husband know how much we appreciate his heroic work for all of us... and thank you for the support you're offering,. |
| 9:10 | [Comment From JMR] THE BART UNIONS ARE IDIOTS IN THIS TIME OF OUR ECONOMY THEY SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT THEY ARE WORKING |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Martha] The Lockheed site is along the dotted blue line which goes along Empire Grade road toward the top of the map. |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Jen] Thanks for this. My mother-in-law is one of the evacuees (she's here with us) and it's been difficult to get updated info. Major thank you to all of the firefighters and their families out there. |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] Pamela, the Lockheed facility is at the far end of Empire Grade past Jamminson Creek road. It's at the north end of that map. |
| 9:12 | Brian Shields: Thanks guys for the help |
| 9:14 | [Comment From JMR] KRON SHOULD DO A STORY ON THE AVERAGE DAY OF A BART WORKER AND SEE WHAT THEY DO ALL DAY , MAYBE I WOULD FEEL SYMPATHETIC TOWARDS THEM I'M A 20 YEAR UNION VET AND I DON'T AGREE ON UNIONS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CERTAIN SITUATIONS |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: Mark Jones did that story Friday... |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: If you're on the BART page JMR, scroll down for the video player with all of our BART Strike reports.. |
| 9:16 | [Comment From JMR] THXS |
| 9:18 | Brian Shields: At 9:15 if you're just joining us, this is KRON 4 live blogging coverage of the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains and the last day of talks before a possible BART Strike. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields Please join our conversation just enter your name or handle and comment below |
| 9:18 | Brian Shields: The latest update from the Lockheed Fire is that it's 50% contained, 6,843 acres, 2,165 firefighters.. |
| 9:20 | [Comment From Jeff&Shawn] A lot of the stuff on the Fire on the 9 AM news is from yesterday. I think they only shared the 50% containment news once. It is the best coverage available on TV. |
| 9:21 | Brian Shields: Well the weekend morning show doesn't have the resources we have during the week and in the evenings. That's why I wanted to get up this morning and live blog so that we could share more information... |
| 9:22 | Brian Shields: If you're listening to the Calfire channel, they're talking about a flare-up this morning in the Mill Creek Road area.. |
| 9:24 | [Comment From JMR] THXS BRAIN I JUST FINISHED WATCHING SOME VIDEOS . ON BART AND NOW I'M DEFINITELY ON BARTS SIDE. ALL YOU UNION BART MEMBERS STOP YOUR CRYIN AND GET BACK TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| 9:25 | Brian Shields: Again the talks resume at 11am. No matter which side you support, I'm sure we're all hoping they come to an agreement to avoid a strike on Monday. I will be here live blogging at 4am tomorrow if the strike is happening. |
| 9:26 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] Here in Gilroy we have light winds blowing toward the west, which concerns me because we never have wind in the a.m. and if we do, it always gets windier in the p.m. Hope that doesn't mean problems for you guys. |
| 9:27 | Brian Shields: That is concerning Elaine.. We will be monitoring the winds... |
| 9:28 | Brian Shields: National Weather Service at Davenport shows east winds at 4mph |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Morning Brian - Well, from the reports I've been reading, sounds like they may be seeing, light at the end of the tunnel. |
| 9:29 | Brian Shields: If the winds keep cooperating, we hope you're right Karen. Thanks for joining us again this morning |
| 9:29 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] Good. Well, here in Gilroy we frequently do things backwards... |
| 9:29 | Brian Shields: Are you smelling smoke at all this morning Elaine? |
| 9:29 | [Comment From Saundie] good morning from Pineridge road in boony doon....light winds here, with very little smoke, 50% containment, oh yeah |
| 9:30 | Brian Shields: Good morning Saundie. That's good to hear.. |
| 9:30 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] No, our sky is fairly blue, less haze, but over the mts to the west the sky is grey/brownish, |
| 9:31 | Brian Shields: Calfire just said they don't have work this morning for the fixed wing tankers along the Bonny Doon road area.. they are moving some reserve forces to Hollister to stage |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Martha] Hi Saundie. Glad you are still safe on Pineridge. |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Saundie] what does the fixed wing tanker do? water dispursment? |
| 9:33 | Brian Shields: Yes.. with obviously a larger payload than you can get from a helo |
| 9:33 | [Comment From Saundie] thanks Martha, how are u this am? did you get back to your place safely? |
| 9:35 | |
| 9:35 | Brian Shields: For those of you just joining us, Calfire did put out another map this morning. I blew it up. It's pixilated a bit but you can see the outline pretty well |
| 9:35 | [Comment From Martha] Hi Saundie. Yes, I mad it in safely to lower Pine Flat road yesterday about 11:30. Put more food down for our feral cat and picked up some more meds. It was quite smokey and ash covered the ground. |
| 9:36 | [Comment From Saundie] Brian, I have never blogged before, and now I see the importance of this type of communication. prior to this fire, i was not a big fan of it...thought it was just a social outlet |
| 9:36 | Brian Shields: And now you're a tv star too.. |
| 9:37 | Brian Shields: The great thing about this platform is that people can share information directly... because collectively you all know more than any of us does individually |
| 9:37 | [Comment From Saundie] so glad you are safe Martha. Oh Brian, your the one that encouraged me... |
| 9:38 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that Shelly. We also have that map embedded further down the page you're on at kron4.com |
| 9:38 | Brian Shields: Great work from the folks at the Santa Cruz Sentinal keeping that updated |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] Brian, I've never been interested in blogging either, but this information you all provide is priceless to anyone concerned. Kudos to you for all the hours you've given to this situation!! |
| 9:39 | Brian Shields: You're welcome... but as I always try to say what I do is very easy compared to the heroic men and women on that fire line. |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Martha] I want to be able to return home to the Doon. Last year during the Martin fire they let us return home before the fire was 100% contained. I hope the same holds true this time around. |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Saundie] I agree, Brian is the best blogging host....is that the right term for it? |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Shelly] Oh good I didnt notice it. Driving along HWY 1 yesterday the fire appeared to be closer to 1 than this map shows. |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: So you could see flames from Hwy 1 yesterday Shelly? |
| 9:40 | [Comment From Martha] Last year we had Kimberlee and this year we have Brian. Let's hope this is the last one. |
| 9:41 | Brian Shields: Kimberlee will be with you guys tomorrow afternoon. My guess is it will be mostly about BART if there is a strike but Kimmie and I are a team |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Shelly] Yes very well |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Saundie] when we were evacuated last year for the Martin Fire, we came back in about three days, once it was about 80% contained, |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] Saundie -- maybe we could term Brian "the blogmeister"? |
| 9:42 | Brian Shields: Gary Radnich calls me "The Blogger" |
| 9:42 | [Comment From Saundie] good point, Martha, I would prefer to talk to Brian in a different venue, no offense Brian |
| 9:43 | Brian Shields: Absolutely we want to do this under different circumstances. But from last year to this year I've really learned about some wonderful people in the Santa Cruz Mountains. |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Saundie] i kind of like "the blogmeister" |
| 9:43 | [Comment From Guest #2] Yeah-but -- the "Blogger" is far more common... "Blogmeister is my vote" (good morning all) |
| 9:43 | Brian Shields: Well I may go to Burgermeister after this today lol |
| 9:45 | [Comment From Guest #2] oops no coffee .... "Blogmeister" is my vote |
| 9:45 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] Sounds like a plan.... |
| 9:45 | Brian Shields: Okay folks we're here for about another 15 minutes this morning. Right now there are no plans for live blogging this evening but I will be up at 4am Monday covering both the fires and the BART situation |
| 9:45 | [Comment From Guest #2] Looks like the Weather Gods have been very very kindly to us - and to Corrall Fire (quickly crossing fingers... crossing eyes, toes, knees, legs.. oops! now I'm a pretzel!! with crossed eyes!!) |
| 9:46 | Brian Shields: It's hard to type with crossed fingers, I've always found... |
| 9:46 | Brian Shields: But seriously, you are so right about the weather |
| 9:46 | Brian Shields: Let's hope that stays the same.. |
| 9:46 | [Comment From Saundie] SC Sentinel has done a good job of covering the Lockheed fire.....unfortunately our local news coverage is spotty....thanks again for KRON for providing this blog...i heard about this blog during the Martin Fire, but was pretty transient for 3 days |
| 9:47 | Brian Shields: Thanks to all of you. |
| 9:47 | [Comment From Guest #2] Yeah -- you end up pounding the keys, one by one... (crossed fingers I mean) |
| 9:48 | [Comment From Guest #2] Hey Bri -- did they say 85% containment of the Altamong/Corral fire?? Huh? Even Altamont pass has low, not-dry, benevolent winds this a.m.? WOW! Weather gods... you rock today! |
| 9:49 | Brian Shields: Yes that's correct 85% on the Corral fire in the Altamont Pass. Full containment is the goal for tomorrow |
| 9:49 | [Comment From Saundie] i read on Cal Fire that four injuries have occured, these are fire fighters, i presume |
| 9:50 | Brian Shields: We had reports earlier that all four injuries were minor and the victims had returned to the fire lines. More indication of the risks and the heroism of those firefighters. If you see any one out there who'se been working it please let them know how much we appreciate their service |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Elaine in Gilroy] My best wishes to everyone for the winds to stay calm and thre fire to cooperate with the firefighters and beat this thing down. Guest #2 sounds like they're all tied up in this lol |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Super D] This works on the I phone |
| 9:51 | Brian Shields: Good morning Super D. Glad you found us on whatever platform... |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Guest #2] @Saundie -- I've also caught a couple of good stories on the Mercury News website, some human interest stories... Sentinel has been the best (although they all seem to share a lot of resources).... Also, the website for KSBW channel 8 (Salinas) has been good. KRON 4 & Bri & Kimberlee are, of course, the tops!! |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Saundie] firefighting is true stewardship....the men and women of this industry are truly our heros |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Super D] I could do live reports from the scene LOL |
| 9:53 | Brian Shields: We had a firefighter on the lines on the blog last year as I recall. Not that I'm encouraging that... they have more important work to do up there than jabbering with us |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Saundie] well, so long my new blogging friends....i have truly enjoyed this. take care, be safe.....peace out! |
| 9:53 | Brian Shields: Thank you Saundie. Please stay safe |
| 9:54 | [Comment From Guest #2] The fellow who does the dry-farming tomatoes in Davenport/Swanton area has so far escaped damage (just barely, thanks again to our valiant firefitghters).... there's a very interesting article about the medical marijuana farm (Sentinel) that as so far stayed viable... Saved houses and most crops, their Memorial Gden & cemetery, half their property & a cabin were lost. |
| 9:55 | Brian Shields: Uh oh... people will be lining up to stand downwinds of the medical marijuana farm if that goes.. |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Guest #2] Re" Medical marijuana article -- I kind of giggled when the fellow said "I've always hated the sound of helicopters" (possible DEA interference)... now I LOVE those guys!! (pics of him waving & stuff) |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Guest #2] OO!! I just heard that the probable cause of the LaBrea / Santa Barbara fire was a campfire that got out of control -- on an illegal pot farm. (sheesh -- is there a theme starting here??) |
| 9:58 | [Comment From Guest #2] Oh -- and the BEST article... my friend -- for gazillions of years -- has managed the fish hatchery (saving Coho salmon & steelhead varieties from the local areas) -- just had a birthday(!), was supposed to retire, but stayed to help save the fishes... |
| 9:59 | Brian Shields: Alright folks, it's time to hang this up for this morning. Thanks so much to everyone who has participated today. Like I said I will be back here at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow talking about BART and the fire... and please keep track of KRON4.com for updates on BART and the fire. Sign up for our twitter alerts @kron4news. Have a great day and let's thank those firefighters, law enforcement officers, animal rescuers, and support people working so hard for all of us. Good day. -- Brian |

| Saturday Evening BART and Wildfires | (08/15/2009) |
| 4:52 | Brian Shields: Good Afternoon. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this evening we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains which is now at 6,800 acres and 30% containtment. We're also talking about the impending BART strike. Talks are underway this afternoon between the ATU and BART management in hopes of averting a walkout. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below. We're here until 7:00 p.m. so please jump on in! |
| 4:57 | Brian Shields: Coming up on the KRON 4 5:00 p.m. news, we'll get the latest in a phone interview from Calfire. We'll also hear from Da Lin about the BART talks.... and you'll hear from me! |
| 4:59 | Brian Shields: Ouch... Calfire is reporting the head index is 101. |
| 5:02 | [Comment From Evelyn Seitz] Does anyone know how close the fire is to Bonny Doon Elementary School? |
| 5:02 | Brian Shields: I have asked Catherine Heenan to ask Calfire about how close we're getting to Bonny Doon.. |
| 5:04 | [Comment From johnny] Brian could you please explain "head index" ? |
| 5:04 | Brian Shields: It's what happens when I mis-type heat index |
| 5:04 | [Comment From Evelyn Seitz] The school is not actually in "downtown" |
| 5:05 | [Comment From johnny] Thanks Brian, you had me goin' on that one. |
| 5:05 | [Comment From Martha] I traveled to lower Pine Flat road this morning about 11:00 AM. They let me through the blockade to feed our feral cat and pick up medications. The area was full of smoke and the ground was covered in ashes. They were delivering a bulldozer to Quail and Martin. |
| 5:06 | Brian Shields: We;re glad you got back out of there safely Martha |
| 5:07 | [Comment From Martha] I thanked the Highway Patrol for their service and they appreciated the sentiments. |
| 5:09 | [Comment From Martha] I am glad you are back on line Brian. I was getting lonely! |
| 5:10 | Brian Shields: I just talked about your trek back in on tv Martha... |
| 5:10 | [Comment From Evelyn Seitz] Residents of Morgan Hill say that they have been smelling the smoke. |
| 5:11 | Brian Shields: Evelyn.. thanks we're been hearing that from Gilroy as well... and even up here in the San Francisco bay area, our towercams are showing a lot of smoke over the bay |
| 5:11 | [Comment From Mark] Today, for the first time, we are seeing smoke in Boulder Creek. We are not far -- perhaps 4 miles, as the crow flies -- from the eastern edge of the fire, but I am assuming this means we have had a wind shift (onshore winds, presumably because it got hot enough today to trigger a convection flow from west to east.) Is CalFire saing anything about this and whether it means a change in the fire's movement? |
| 5:12 | Brian Shields: Good afternoon Mark. We are definitely seeing warmer temperatures as we mentioned earlier we're hearing about a triple digit heat index |
| 5:12 | [Comment From Tim Wanner] We had planned a trrip to Santa Cruz next Tuesday. Should we cancel the trip beacuse of the smoke? |
| 5:13 | Brian Shields: Tim. It's hard to predict that far out... but we are expecting the fire to be at least a week away from containment and two weeks from being out. |
| 5:13 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks, Brian. I heard that you can call the Sheriff's command center at 831-458-7173 and they are compiling a list of evacuees. Supposedly they will call you back when it is safe to return to your homes. Don't know if anyone else has reported this. I just came back online. |
| 5:13 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that resource Martha |
| 5:14 | Brian Shields: The weather service is reporting winds in Santa Cruz from the ENE at 6 with gusts to 12 |
| 5:14 | [Comment From Martha] I called them and they took my name, phone number and address. |
| 5:14 | [Comment From Tim Wanner] Brain, thanks.... Tim |
| 5:15 | Brian Shields: Call me that and it might go to my head lol. No problem Tim Stick around we'll be getting more info... |
| 5:16 | [Comment From Mark] Has there been any update since this morning (or else when is an update expected) on acres burned and percent containment? Last I have heard was 6800 acres and 30%. I'm trying to gauge how much progress they are making, despite the heat and change in wind direction. |
| 5:17 | Brian Shields: Calfire only updates twice a day.. usually around 8 am and 7pm. The Calfire spokesman we just had on TV about five minutes ago had the same numbers you just gave |
| 5:17 | Brian Shields: Also they put out a tiny jpg version of the fire map today... not the big pdf they did during the week. |
| 5:18 | [Comment From Tim Wanner] Thanks for information. I have 2 small kids and worry about the ash. |
| 5:19 | Brian Shields: If you have anyone who has asthma or other respiratory problems, I would avoid the area... of course I'm not a doctor or expert .... but use your good judgment |
| 5:19 | [Comment From Mark] I'm trying to make sense of your report of ENE winds in Santa Cruz, Brian. It's hard to see why we would get more smoke in Boulder Creek today as the result of a wind shift from NW to ENE. Of course, nothing says the wind direction at the fire is the same as in Santa Cruz. |
| 5:19 | [Comment From Martha] Does anyone have any information on the fire breaks around Bonny Doon road? Also on the back fires in that area as well? |
| 5:19 | [Comment From Guest] I just came back from McDermott station, The containment is spread out all over the fire edge. A "hard" line is at the edge near Thaye, and extending up along Warranella trail to San vincente drainage they cut a 5 dozer wide line and lit backfires last night. The volunteers were feeling fairly positive about the progress, as long as the wind stays still. |
| 5:20 | Brian Shields: What were the winds like up there McDermott... (thanks for that great detailed report) |
| 5:20 | Brian Shields: We were hearing this morning the goal was to have a line all the way around the fire by the end of the day today |
| 5:20 | [Comment From Christa] That last report was from me. tHE WINDS WERE CALM AND very SMOKY |
| 5:20 | Brian Shields: Thanks Christa... |
| 5:21 | [Comment From Mia] Hi Brian, first there is no downtown in Bonny Doon, just wanted to clarify. Second, I live in Bonny Doon and so does most of my family and we have not left even though the news has reported that we are in the mandatory evacuation zone. The most frustrating part of this fire has been dealing with the CHP at the road blocks. I live across from Alba road and the officers there have been friendly and understanding, but the officers at the intersection of felton empire, empire, and ice cream grade have been rude to all of my family members. Because my family doesn't want to leave they have been imprisoned at home because if they leave bonny doon the CHP won't let them back home. Last night we were told by Cal Fire that residents would be allowed past the road blocks if they showed their license and valid address, but when my sister tried to return to work this morning they refused to let her through. The section of the road closed is from felton empire to alba road. We would greatly appreciate it if CHP opened up this area to residents!! This area is still miles away from the fire so there is no immediate danger. |
| 5:23 | [Comment From Christa] Mia, |
| 5:24 | Brian Shields: Mia... I'm sure the CHP officers are doing their very best in a stressful situation for them as well... And obviously the sheriff's deputies know the area better.
I would also say that I would hope you do get out if you're in an area that has any danger. Keeping you and your family safe is the most important thing. |
| 5:27 | [Comment From Martha] Mia: I was able to get through the road block at lower Pine Flat road this morning by showing my ID. Of course, I had to walk into my house. Do you know the Hinzes on Empire Grade road? |
| 5:27 | [Comment From Christa]
Mia, My parents are at the end of Vick and have stayed. The line they have drawn at San vincente drainage needs to keep holding through tonight. as I was told, if that fails especially with high wind, we are going to be in VERY serious trouble in the Conifer, Vick, Molina area. |
| 5:27 | Brian Shields: Mia please let your parents know they are in our prayers... and please same thing with them... be sure they can get out before it's too late.. |
| 5:27 | [Comment From Mia] But there needs to be an understanding that the people who choose to stay should be allowed to go to town to get supplies and be able to return home. If the sheriffs knew the area they would know that the fire is still about 4 miles from where my family lives. Its not fair to treat residents this way, my family hasn't been able to leave the house since wednesday because they know they won't be able to get back in. |
| 5:28 | Brian Shields: Mia I don't want to pick a fight with you but why not evacuate with everyone else just for the sake of caution? Because also the firefighters and law enforcement have enough to deal with without a lot of civilian traffic in and out.. |
| 5:28 | [Comment From Debra] How is the Thayer area? We helped evacuate 14 llamas there on Thursday. |
| 5:29 | Brian Shields: Okay the newscast is coming to an end but we will be here on the live blog until 7pm |
| 5:30 | [Comment From Christa] Thay did a VERY big line on the fire point toward thayer and BD road. They felt confident that it would hold, but the same thing goes for that liune as San Vincente.... |
| 5:31 | [Comment From Mia] We haven't evacuated because 1) we have no where to go and we would cost a lot of money to stay in a hotel and 2) we would rather protect our house and 3) we have never received a reverse 911 call or have had anyone come to our door and told us to leave. So the only way we have heard we are under mandatory evacuation is through the news. My dad and most of my family live on Feather Lane off of empire and I live with my mom on empire across from alba. |
| 5:31 | Brian Shields: Debra thanks for helping with the llamas. I know a lot of people were concerned about that. Thanks for that Thayer Road update Christa |
| 5:33 | Brian Shields: I hear you Mia... I would just say cut those CHP guys... and all of the law enforcement personnel some slack. I'll leave it at that |
| 5:33 | [Comment From Christa] We havn't recieved a call either, and are on the edge of the evac zone, but don't dare leave because they might change the road closure and not let us back in. I know what you are going through. Frustrating but necessary for public safety. |
| 5:34 | Brian Shields: I know most of the focus here has been on the fire.. but if anyone has thoughts on BART, the forum is open for that as well. The two sides are still in talks that began at 1pm. |
| 5:36 | [Comment From Christa] I will make a comment on our Volunteer Bonny Doon Fire Team....thay are an AMAZING group of people who are working very hard to help protect our wonderful community. |
| 5:37 | [Comment From Elaine] Re - BART - I'm retired and not affected, thank goodness, but good lord, those janitors make much more than teachers!!! With much less responsibility. They should be glad they have good jobs unlike so many others. |
| 5:38 | Brian Shields: Well the janitors are with SEIU and they voted to accept the contract. It's ATU, the train operators and station agents that are holding out |
| 5:39 | [Comment From Elaine] Oh, sorry. My misinformation. |
| 5:39 | [Comment From Evelyn Seitz] One of the things that we stress in Community Emergency Response Team training is to have emergency supplies stored up for at least 3 days for each member of the family, including the animals. People may not be able to get out when there is a disaster, and rescuers can not get in. |
| 5:40 | Brian Shields: Well that's good advice for all of us. Even us city folks could be facing an earthquake that would require such supplies |
| 5:42 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] I got back from the Country Estates area of B.D. a bit ago. They are still letting folks go through the roadblock on foot or on bike. I biked in and the strike teams are still deployed at various points all up and down B.D. Road, Cathedral Park and Country Estates and I'm sure points further up. It was very smoky and ash was falling when I left. Two of my my neighbors stayed back. We all talked to Calfire and Last chance road area was of major concern and the eastern B.D. finger of the fire was also of concern. |
| 5:43 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that info Tony. While there's been a lot of focus on Bonny Doon and Thayer Road... we're also concerned about the Last Chance area on the other side of the fire |
| 5:44 | Brian Shields: Do you have a reading on how far the fire is from Bonny Doon road? |
| 5:44 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] Still approx. 1.5 miles |
| 5:44 | Brian Shields: That's good to hear... so it essentially hasn't gotten closer in the last 24 hours. |
| 5:49 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] It seems so. They are really anticipating the winds to be the big problem. If they shift, the whole focus changes. |
| 5:49 | [Comment From Ben L] Hello Brian. Two things - I've had some recent phone activity with people claiming they've heard of a call to evacuate portions of Ben Lomond because of the Lockheed fire. Have you heard anything similar to that? And secondly, the fire map that Cal Fire put up on their "incident" website today is awfully tiny compared to the ones from the last few days. Could this have anything to do with budget restraints and is there any chance you could enlarge it and pass it on for us to see. Thank you. |
| 5:50 | Brian Shields: I think it's just a factor of the weekend resources on the map. And unfortunately if I blow it larger, it will just pixilate and we'll lose the details |
| 5:50 | [Comment From Debra] If there are still any livestock that need evacuating call 458-7184. I am a team leader for Equine Evac & we are at your service if the need arises. |
| 5:51 | [Comment From johnny] The Google fire map I just looked at puts the fire about 3/4 mile from Thayer and Bonnie Doon roads. Don't know how accurate this is. |
| 5:51 | Brian Shields: If you scroll down on this page, there's a google map from the Santa Cruz Sentinal.. |
| 5:51 | Brian Shields: Oh and Ben, I will see what I can do to confirm these evacuation rumors for Ben Lomand |
| 5:54 | Brian Shields: Okay, I just talked with Calfire. The Ben Lomand evacuation rumors are a HOAX. He's been getting calls about it. It's not true |
| 5:55 | Brian Shields: BTW, Calfire web site put out an update at 5:30. Still 30% containment. Now up to 6,843 acres and 2,028 firefighters |
| 5:55 | [Comment From Christa] The best map was the Google earth map that you guys did yesterday with the fire overlay. |
| 5:56 | Brian Shields: Unfortunately I can't get that to scale with that tiny jpg they put out today. I tried before I launched this but it looked like you know what |
| 5:56 | [Comment From Firefighter] Brian, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties are now at the max of the amount of immediate need resources. They (IC) are now ordering resources from down south.. |
| 5:56 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that update firefighter... and thank you so much to all of the brave men and women out fighting this fire for us |
| 5:56 | [Comment From Ben L] Thanks Brian. I appreciate your help. |
| 5:56 | Brian Shields: No problem. That's what we're here for.... to provide accurate info and to quash rumors.. |
| 6:00 | [Comment From Ben L] Smokier here today in Ben Lomond - must have been a shift of wind in the early afternoon because previous to today, in spite of our close proximity, our air had been clear. - - - I want to send out a large and sincere "thank you" to all of the firefighters and other personnel who are helping fight this fire and provide us with accurate information. |
| 6:00 | [Comment From Donna Dalton] hey cooper, thanks for your help, we have lots of horse people up here in bonnydoon as you know. saundie and i are fine at pineridge and holding |
| 6:00 | Brian Shields: I hope you all heard Saundie live on our morning show today.. she was great! |
| 6:03 | [Comment From Ben L] i missed it :( |
| 6:03 | [Comment From Debra] Deb Cooper is on my team. She is an awesome horseperson who has expertise in dealing with problem horses. That's why she's at the top of my list for call outs. |
| 6:04 | Brian Shields: That name's awfully familiar. I may have interviewed her when I went to the Loma Prieta BBQ last year... |
| 6:06 | [Comment From Debra] Deb Cooper owns Moon Valley Ranch in Larkin Valley. |
| 6:06 | [Comment From Super D] its really smokey up here in Scotts Valley |
| 6:07 | Brian Shields: Good evening Super D... |
| 6:07 | [Comment From Guest #2] Hi again... Yep, Saundie was great on the phone-interview.... |
| 6:07 | [Comment From Saundie] Hi Brian and all....yes, Deb Cooper is awesome. |
| 6:07 | [Comment From Super D] not as bad as it is in Felton or Santa Cruz though |
| 6:07 | Brian Shields: Hi Saundie or should I say Saundie Superstar! |
| 6:07 | [Comment From Super D] evening Brian |
| 6:07 | [Comment From Martha] Ben Lomond is really smokey this evening as well. |
| 6:08 | Brian Shields: Once again in case you missed it earlier... rumors of evacuations in Ben Lomand are a hoax... |
| 6:08 | Brian Shields: But the smoke has got to be terrible.. especially for people with asthma or other respiratory conditions |
| 6:08 | [Comment From Saundie] the helicopters have been flying right over our house all day....so close I could practically see thier faces |
| 6:09 | Brian Shields: Well give them a wave for all of us.. |
| 6:10 | [Comment From Super D] Brian I called the Cal Star operations office and the Boulder Creek fire Captain about the thing with Cal Star last night and left a message at both |
| 6:10 | [Comment From Saundie] we had a clear day until around 2pm, then the wind shifted and the smoke rolled in....to much to stay outside |
| 6:10 | [Comment From Guest #2] What are the current stats? Oh, another (ksbw8) sez 2028 personnel currently.... i'll look for more. *** Air quality advisory for Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay, and Monterey County-wide. *** |
| 6:11 | Brian Shields: 6,843 acres - 30% containment as of 5:30 p.m. |
| 6:11 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] I had to stop by real quick and check in. Having heli withdrawals lol |
| 6:11 | [Comment From allan] KSFO is reporting 7000 acres with 35% |
| 6:12 | Brian Shields: I just did a hard refresh on the Calfire page and .... 6,843 acres - 40% containment |
| 6:12 | [Comment From Guest] Seems the winds have changed again as the smoke that was here in Boulder Creek has dissipated. |
| 6:13 | Brian Shields: So that's a big jump in containment... and only 43 acres of spread since the morning update. Sounds like they're getting a lot accomplished out there |
| 6:13 | [Comment From Saundie] the wind just shifted heading west, i think, and it is clearing...this is happended last night, same time, same bat channel |
| 6:13 | Brian Shields: If only we could get a call from Commissioner Gordon. Thanks Saundie |
| 6:14 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] We had a 32,000 acre forest fire about 6 years ago that started by a police officer at the target range. Bullet went into tree and started fire. |
| 6:14 | Brian Shields: Oops.. |
| 6:14 | Brian Shields: But it is a good reminder that the smallest of sparks can cause this kind of devastation.. |
| 6:14 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] BIG oops |
| 6:16 | [Comment From Guest #2] There was a tentative, and hopeful report from a firefighter leader dude, who said that -- IF all goes well, and IF we don't get pesky weather pranks... etc... the firefighters might be able to go home by end of next week... |
| 6:17 | Brian Shields: Firefighter leader dude? lol. That's what we heard last night... they were aiming for full containment by a week from tomorrow... with everything out by two weeks from tomorrow |
| 6:17 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] So true Brian |
| 6:17 | [Comment From Saundie] defensible space will save your home, the rest of the open forest is up for grabs, unfortunately |
| 6:17 | [Comment From Super D] the only thing Im hearing on the radio is planes and copters lineing up for drops there could be a big increase in the containment number by morning |
| 6:18 | Brian Shields: Let's hope you're right Super D. 40% sounds awfully good tonight |
| 6:18 | [Comment From Guest] I wish everyone used caution around here. I've been traveling on Bear Creek Road and have seen people throw lit cigarette butts out the window. How can someone be so selfish and inconsiderate? I have no idea. |
| 6:18 | Brian Shields: Don't you know those rules aren't for them.. they're just for the rest of us. Seriously I hear you... |
| 6:18 | [Comment From Mark] From the improvement in Boulder Creek in the last hour, I am assuming that it has started to cool off as the sun gets lower, reversing the convection flow, so that the wind is now blowing off-shore. |
| 6:18 | [Comment From Saundie] i hope this is old news real soon |
| 6:19 | Brian Shields: Wouldn't it be great if this could get contained quickly and BART settles and we can all have a nice relaxing week ahead... |
| 6:23 | Brian Shields: Okay folks.. we've kind of hit a lull here. Unless there's great hew and cry I may shut down at 6:30 and go have dinner with my friends in Redwood City... |
| 6:23 | [Comment From Guest #2] I just noticed an old newsppaper (March 2009) that Mr. Channing Verden, the contractor fellow who is charged with starting the Summit fire last year (due to lack of care, not due to arson)... the cause of that (4200-acre) fire was determined to be "contractor & crew allegedly left smoldering two piles of brush he was hired to burn, according to court documents. A month later, sparks from those piles ignited nearby brush and trees and became the massive fire..... " One of the key issues is the size of the burn-piles; apparently there had been a face-to-face warning 2-3? months before. Amazing how long those things can stay underground and then kazoom!! we're on fire majorly!! |
| 6:24 | Brian Shields: It doesn't take much... and yes... even a month later. We'll see where that goes in court.. and I still haven't heard any kind of definitive word on a possible cause for this year's fire.. |
| 6:24 | [Comment From Martha] Brian, what's the schedule for the blog tomorrow? |
| 6:25 | Brian Shields: I will be here 8-10 a.m. tomorrow. I don't know about the afternoon since I have to be back at 4am Monday for the BART Strike.. |
| 6:25 | Brian Shields: I meant I get to be back, of course ;) |
| 6:25 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks, Brian! |
| 6:26 | Brian Shields: Anyone have some final thoughts for tonight? |
| 6:26 | [Comment From Guest #2] btw, that Summit contractor story was San Jose Mercury News, 4/22, front page, to be fully disclosin'. |
| 6:26 | [Comment From Guest] I know it's kinda early in this fight, but is there a number to call to find out if the heros fighting this fire need anything? Water, food, whatever? |
| 6:27 | [Comment From Super D] they are going to look at something at the Lexinton Resivor |
| 6:27 | [Comment From Jame] Wildfire: I can smell fire/smoke in Cupertino, is this from the lockheed fire ? |
| 6:27 | Brian Shields: In cupertino... I would say most likely... although the Corral fire in the Atlamont Pass area could be contributing there.. |
| 6:28 | Brian Shields: Here's the latest on that fire... again the Corral fire in the Altamont Pass:
15,000 acres - 60% containment Full containment expected August 17, 2009. |
| 6:28 | [Comment From Martha] Final thoughts are kudos to the firefighters and support people. |
| 6:28 | [Comment From Jame] thanks brian |
| 6:28 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Brian - did you get Madden 10 conquered last night? |
| 6:29 | Brian Shields: I don't know about conquered... but I did get started Karen... but the important thing is to echo Martha. Hooray for the firefighters and law enforcement people, and all of the support personnel. We owe they all so much |
| 6:29 | [Comment From Guest #2] Thought: It would be great if there was a number for Santa Cruz folks to call for updates... road closures, air quality warnings, etc.... |
| 6:29 | Brian Shields: Calfire does have a number (831) 335-0378 (Lockheed Fire Information ) that is on their public web site. But again let's not overburdon those folks either... |
| 6:29 | [Comment From Guest #2] Final thought for Brian - as well as the wonderful kick-butt firefighters: THANK YOU - YOU ROCK!!! |
| 6:30 | Brian Shields: On that note... have a great evening. Watch KRON 4 news at 11 for updates and I will see you all here tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. Good night. |
| 6:30 |

| Saturday Morning BART and Wildfires | (08/15/2009) |
| 8:01 | Brian Shields: Good Morning. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this morning we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains which is now at 5,036 acres and 15% containtment. We're also talking about the impending BART strike. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below |
| 8:05 | Brian Shields: The big concern for today involves shifting winds. If the winds shift to the Northeast, that could lead to dryer conditions and hotter temperatures for the firefighters. |
| 8:09 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Good Morning Brian |
| 8:10 | Brian Shields: Good morning Karen |
| 8:12 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Looks like a lot of humidity there today. Did fog set in last night? |
| 8:13 | Brian Shields: 82% humidity with calm winds at the latest observation in santa Cruz |
| 8:13 | [Comment From Shannon] Planned a vacation to Santa Cruz leaving Fresno tomorrow. I'm worried about the air quality. Planned on hanging out on the beach and Boardwalk. Trying to decide if we should postpone for another time. |
| 8:14 | Brian Shields: Good morning Shannon. We were getting a lot of reports last night of very smoky conditions around the boardwalk. If anyone in your family is sensitive to smoke, I might delay the trip. |
| 8:14 | [Comment From Gilroy resident] Good morning Brian, air still smoky odor here. Also, looks like foggy and breezy. What is the news on Santa Cruz fire spread? |
| 8:15 | Brian Shields: Good morning Gilroy The latest numbers from this morning are 5,036 acres. Still 15% containment |
| 8:16 | [Comment From Shannon] That's what I was thinking. My daughter has mild asthma. How many approximate miles is the fire from the boardwalk? |
| 8:17 | [Comment From Jeff H] We're smelling smoke in Downtown San Jose. Did the winds shift? |
| 8:17 | Brian Shields: The weather service is reporting calm winds in Santa Cruz... so I don't have a direction. The smoke in SJ could be from both the Lockheed fire and the fire in the Altamont Pass |
| 8:18 | [Comment From Glen] on msnbc they said the 6,800 burned, 30% containtment at 8:13am Saturday morning. is that right? |
| 8:19 | [Comment From ken] Good morning Brian. Could you please provide the Google Earth link again. thanks |
| 8:19 | Brian Shields: Good morning Ken. Calfire hasn't put out an updated map yet this morning for me to build off of. |
| 8:19 | [Comment From Glen] I live in Seattle but Santa Cruz is my home town Iam watching everything on your web site |
| 8:20 | Brian Shields: Thanks for being a part of our community Glen from Seattle. Karen is in Idaho and she's had some wonderful insights throughout our coverage. |
| 8:20 | [Comment From Christa] cal fire info line is trying to check out where that info came from. |
| 8:21 | [Comment From Glen] Please keep updated on the fire for me please I have friends and family there. |
| 8:21 | [Comment From Christa] They have re-closed parts of Empire Grtade that were open yesterday |
| 8:21 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that update |
| 8:22 | [Comment From Christa] The ham radio group has been fantastic! |
| 8:23 | [Comment From Christa] We are sitting tight, since if we leave we may not be able to get back in |
| 8:23 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Glen - I'm originally from Bay Area and went to grandmas in Santa Cruz every Sunday for family dinner. Never thought I'd miss ocean and boardwalk, but sure do. |
| 8:24 | Brian Shields: It does grow on you.. |
| 8:24 | [Comment From Glen] Well whats the update on the fire Brian |
| 8:24 | Brian Shields: We're trying to confirm those msnbc numbers... we're going to have a phone interview here as soon as the producers can arrange it with Calfire. I will keep you updated if we get confirmation |
| 8:24 | [Comment From Glen] Karen Santa Cruz is history county I lived there for 37 years and born there |
| 8:26 | [Comment From mrt] the msnbc article seems to have info i haven't seen. since it started, i haven't heard/seen highway 9 and evacuation in the same sentence |
| 8:26 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] my brother use to work on the boardwalk. I remember Hwy 17 as a 2 lane road...........Boy, that makes me old as dirt lol |
| 8:27 | Brian Shields: Hwy 17 is beautiful... but scary at times especially on the downhill slope |
| 8:27 | [Comment From Christa] For shannon....the fog is thick this am 1000 ft and below. Hard to tell when it will burn off. The Boardwalk is about 8 miles from the fire, but it doesn't matter how close, just the wind direction. There was alot of smoke there yesterday, and none at my parents house 2 miles from the fire. |
| 8:27 | [Comment From JP] Used to live in Boulder Creek around 30 years ago. Has it changed much? |
| 8:27 | [Comment From jim] I am on Smith Grade. If I leave can I get back in? Yesterday the road block was on Bonny Doon Road just down from the winery. Not sure where it is today. |
| 8:27 | Brian Shields: I'm still waiting to get an updated map this morning Jim. Has anyone else been in that area? |
| 8:28 | [Comment From Shannon] Thank you Christa! |
| 8:28 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Hwy 17 many memories - Car sick every trip over mtn lol |
| 8:29 | [Comment From Glen] King5 news is doing there best on the news about the fire here In Seattle |
| 8:29 | Brian Shields: KING5 is a great Belo station. |
| 8:29 | [Comment From jim] There are a couple of neighbors here. Just South of Bonny Doon Road. |
| 8:31 | [Comment From Martha] No. Yesterday, someone who lives on Pine Flat road was able to get through the road block near the winery. |
| 8:31 | [Comment From Guest #2] @Jim - regarding Boulder Creek.... does stop light sound like the Olden Daze??? yep, it has sure changed a LOT! |
| 8:31 | [Comment From kat] jim, my sister said they were blocking between the winery and smith grade so you should be ok. |
| 8:31 | [Comment From Christa] I live above Smith off of Empire, and we haven't tested the road blocks this am yet. The Kron google earth map shows empire grade closed down to smith or farther, but they have not enforced that as of last night. |
| 8:32 | [Comment From Glen] Kron4 news your news is better news than any others news in the area |
| 8:32 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Brian - which of the 3 station is best to listen to, on radio reference? |
| 8:32 | Brian Shields: I've been bouncing back and forth between the ham radio at the top and the calfire channel in the middle.. |
| 8:32 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Karen - from one 'dirt' to another.... I remember car-sick; omigosh a lot! - and cars back then didn't 'handle' well; no shocks on cars to speak of; and the roads were wiggly and bumpy as heck ! |
| 8:32 | [Comment From Glen] I miss watching you kron4 and for those breaking news |
| 8:32 | Brian Shields: Thanks for the kind words Glen |
| 8:35 | [Comment From jim] The deer don't seem too concerned as they nibble on my garden. If I didn't know there was a fire just to the north, I'd say it looks like a typical foggy morning. |
| 8:35 | [Comment From Cherry] I have friends who are evacuated so I am watching for fire updates, but I also commute on BART...any breaking news updates on the strike |
| 8:36 | Brian Shields: Unfortunately no Cherry on BART. It doesn't look like there are talks set for the weekend at this point |
| 8:37 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] lol Guest #2 - I don't remember the bumpy part, just the terrible turns. Almost makes me sick now, thinking of it. |
| 8:37 | [Comment From Cherry] Thanks for the update. This news forum is great! |
| 8:38 | Brian Shields: I'm going to do a phone update about you guys on TV in the next block |
| 8:38 | [Comment From Glen] I'll blow the rain clouds to the fire ok Brian from Seattle Wa |
| 8:38 | Brian Shields: We'll take it Glen |
| 8:38 | [Comment From Martha] I am in Ben Lomond and it is foggy here this morning. What is it like in Bonny Doon? |
| 8:39 | [Comment From Glen] We had rain for the last few days Brian |
| 8:40 | [Comment From Guest #2] OOPS! -- @JP (not Jim) - regarding Boulder Creek.... does stop light sound like the Olden Daze??? yep, it has sure changed a LOT! |
| 8:44 | [Comment From jim] Martha, It feels like fog with a taste of smoke here in Bonny Boon. But there is no moisture on the ground. |
| 8:44 | [Comment From Kristen] Hi Brian. I live in Livermore, west of the Altamont Fire, yet we smell smoke this AM. Is it the Lockheed smoke due to the wind change? Is the Altamont Fire out? I cannot find info yet. Thanks. |
| 8:44 | Brian Shields: The Altamont fire is still raging. |
| 8:46 | Brian Shields: The latest update from Calfire on the Corral Fire in the Altamont Pass puts it at 15,000 acres and 20% containment |
| 8:46 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks, Jim. Where are you in Bonny Doon? We evacuated from lower Pine Flat road on Thursday. |
| 8:46 | [Comment From Cherry] Great news break Brian! Hope more people join. |
| 8:46 | Brian Shields: Thanks Cherry... I do have a face made for radio ;) |
| 8:47 | [Comment From Kristen] you did great on TV- thanks for being there ( and here) for everyone. |
| 8:47 | [Comment From ks] you have a lot of yankee fans coming if they stay in san francisco they dont want to drive to the coliseum they want to take bart |
| 8:47 | Brian Shields: Thanks Kristen. KS, that could be the only good thing about the BART Strike... we don't need those Yankee fans at the coliseum ;) |
| 8:48 | [Comment From jim] Thanks Brian. It is very helpful for us to have as much communication as possible about the fires. Where is the video camera setup above the coast? |
| 8:49 | [Comment From Guest #2] @JP -re: Boulder Creek, go to Google maps, put in: |
| 8:49 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ jp: enter " Highway 9 & Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, CA " on Google maps; click on satellite view... shows BC today. Yep it's changed a bit!! |
| 8:50 | Brian Shields: That will work |
| 8:50 | Brian Shields: Jim unfortunately I don't have a live helicopter shot this morning |
| 8:50 | [Comment From saundie] hello and good morning from pineridge, off of Empire Grade in boony doon |
| 8:51 | Brian Shields: Good morning Saundie. What are you seeing this morning? |
| 8:51 | [Comment From jim] Martha, I am on Smith Grade Road, just south of Bonny Doon Road. Sounds like the aircraft just started flying. |
| 8:51 | [Comment From News Stringer] Thank's Brain |
| 8:51 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian - great news break; I just heard on another channel that the current stats on Lockheed fire are: 6800 acres burned; 30% containment; progress (or lack of) will depend on wind & weather conditions. |
| 8:52 | Brian Shields: We've heard those reports but can't confirm them. We have a spokesman from Calfire who will be on tv at 9:15 |
| 8:52 | [Comment From saundie] the smoke comes in and out like an accordian, with the shift of the wind, clear right now |
| 8:52 | [Comment From Christa] Saundie...do you have any info on Empire being re-closed? I am off Bonnywood |
| 8:52 | [Comment From Bonny Doon Resident] Hi Brian, I'm still not able to get home any news??? |
| 8:52 | [Comment From saundie] yep, just heard our first helicopter, they flew over our place all day yesterday |
| 8:52 | [Comment From Glen] What about KGO for Helicopter shot any thing there Brian |
| 8:53 | Brian Shields: We are in a pool with kgo and kpix for helicopter shots but I'm not seeing their feed this morning |
| 8:53 | Brian Shields: We have Linton Johnson from BART on live in the studio at 9:00 |
| 8:54 | [Comment From Martha] Jim, thanks for the update. We live near the corner of Pine Flat and Martin. Just around the bend from the winery. |
| 8:54 | [Comment From Bonny Doon Resident] Brain do you have an updated google earth map? |
| 8:54 | Brian Shields: I don't yet BDR |
| 8:54 | [Comment From Omar] Hey, sorry to interrupt your conversation about the fire but can anyone give me an update on the BART situation? |
| 8:54 | [Comment From Guest #2] Ooops again... I mean YOUR spot on the news was great; prior to that, on-air info was sketchy this a.m. |
| 8:54 | Brian Shields: There is no update on BART. No talks are set for the weekend that I know of. The strike is still on for Monday morning. How are you preparing Omar? |
| 8:55 | [Comment From saundie] no update yet on my end related to road closure |
| 8:55 | [Comment From Bonny Doon Resident] What time do you think??? Thanks so much. |
| 8:55 | [Comment From Glen] 9:15 ok Brian I'll want for the update |
| 8:56 | Brian Shields: Saundie or Jim... we would love to hear what you're seeing. Would either of you be willing to go on TV with us in the next hour on the phone? If so, please send me your number at shields@kron.com |
| 8:56 | [Comment From Omar] I have no idea what I am going to do because BART is my main means of transportation. The strike just makes my life harder. I will be looking for alternative ways of getting to San Francisco though. |
| 8:56 | Brian Shields: Where are you coming from? |
| 8:57 | [Comment From Omar] El Cerrito |
| 8:58 | Brian Shields: BART will be running some buses as well AC Transit. We also have a link to Craigslist carpooling on our BART page... |
| 9:00 | [Comment From Omar] The thing is that I work during the night 11PM - 7AM. Do they still have buses running before 11PM? |
| 9:00 | Brian Shields: That I don't know but I will try to find out... Do you live near any co-workers who could carpool with you? |
| 9:00 | [Comment From Guest #2] @Karen - my grandparents lived up in Bonny Doon by the airport 1963. We would take road trips to San Jose... bumps and windiness and omigosh it was tough on a young tummy!. - (this 'dirt' - me - was born in 1950)... ALSO re: beach and bdwlk-- heck I live in San Jose area, and I often think "tI wanna go home to my FOG!!" |
| 9:00 | [Comment From Alameda REsident] I can smell the smoke all the way up here at 7:50AM. I am not certain if it is from the SC county fires, however, no other fires have been reported around my surrounding area. |
| 9:01 | Brian Shields: Depending on winds, it could be coming from the Altamont Pass as well. |
| 9:02 | [Comment From Cherry] On BART - I plan on telecommuting on Monday and then see how it goes (concord to San Bruno commute) |
| 9:02 | Brian Shields: Ouch Cherry... that's a long way.. |
| 9:02 | [Comment From Omar] No, there are no near co-workers because the only other people that work at those hours live in the City. I will look at the bus schedules and see what I can find. Thanks for the help Brian. |
| 9:03 | [Comment From JB] Hi Brian, do you know if Gov. Schwarzenegger is back in town and if he's going to get involved with BART negotiations? |
| 9:03 | Brian Shields: The Governor will be at the fire command post at 10:00 a.m. in Watsonville. KRON 4's Jeff Pierce will be there... |
| 9:04 | Brian Shields: He's said he won't impose a cooling off period on BART. I've heard nothing about him getting personally involved. |
| 9:04 | Brian Shields: Okay we can confirm those updated numbers on the Lockheed Fire. 6,800 acres. 30% containment |
| 9:04 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ karen ... lived by BD airport until 1963. (seems I'm skilled at typos!) Btw, my uncle Davie is living in tiny Bruneau, ID, with no A/C, recuperating fm a leg injury - he surely misses the fog!! |
| 9:04 | [Comment From Bonny Doon Resident] Why does Cal Fire seem to be putting out much less press info than they use to, I remember during the Martin Fire we would get updates 2-3x per day, it is very frustrating! |
| 9:04 | [Comment From Martha] The San Jose Mercury reported 6,800 acres and 30% containment on the Lockheed fire. Are those numbers correct? Do we have an updated map on the fire's progress? |
| 9:05 | Brian Shields: Yes the numbers are confirmed... no new map yet |
| 9:05 | [Comment From JB] Thank You. |
| 9:05 | [Comment From BCCountryClub&Golf Res.] your helicopters have kept me awake for 2 nights |
| 9:06 | Brian Shields: Sorry about that... but it is a big breaking news story |
| 9:06 | Brian Shields: Linton Johnson is on TV right now.. |
| 9:06 | [Comment From saundie] oure neighbor, who volunteers with BD Fire reported last they were making a stand near Last Chance through the night....the news is reporting they have been successful so far |
| 9:07 | Brian Shields: We were talking about last Chance and Scott's Creek flare-ups last night... we were told they were successful in controlling those |
| 9:07 | [Comment From Retired FF] Hi all |
| 9:07 | Brian Shields: Good morning FF |
| 9:08 | [Comment From Retired FF] Brian you and your station has done a great job covering these wildfire events. Thank you |
| 9:08 | [Comment From saundie] yes, that area is the most threatening to homes, i understand, but also Thayer road off bonny doon road |
| 9:10 | [Comment From Retired FF] Saundie did the marine layer make it to your place last night? |
| 9:11 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us, Good Morning. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this morning we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains which is now at 6,800 acres and 30% containtment. We're also talking about the impending BART strike. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Is my screen frozen, or is heli not up yet? |
| 9:12 | [Comment From saundie] yes it did, we are sleeping with one eye open, and when i notice it outside early this am, i stepped out on my deck, and did not smell smoke, hwew |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Shelly] Im at Felton empire and Empire Grade and the fog did not make it up to us last night but it did cool down a lot. |
| 9:12 | [Comment From Glen] Yes Thanks Brian Glen |
| 9:14 | [Comment From BB] Has anyone heard any news about the Swanton Pacific Ranch or the roundhouse and train there on Swanton Rd? |
| 9:14 | [Comment From WGK] About 5 minutes ago several aircraft passed over us hear near summit rd/east of 17 |
| 9:14 | [Comment From saundie] we really cooled off last night as well, our low was around 57 |
| 9:14 | Brian Shields: That's great news. we have Calfire's spokesman on in the next segment. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Christa] Fog is at about 1000 feet. Planes are flying now. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] Thank you so much Brian. I just stumbled upon this blog and this is the best source of info I've found on the fire. 30% containment is great news. |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Retired FF] The fog is a great thing, although Cal Fire has said they are only 30% with the marine influence last night I bet they made even more progress but are being conservative with there stats. |
| 9:15 | Brian Shields: The big concern today is that we could see a windshift from the northeast which could reduce the moisture and cause more flare-ups. Let's hope that doesn't happen |
| 9:15 | [Comment From Retired FF] This is great news for Bonny Doon! |
| 9:16 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] is there a link to show the map graphic that is being shown on the news cast that shows the actual roads and directions of the fires? |
| 9:16 | Brian Shields: The last update I have on Google Earth is from last night... |
| 9:17 | Brian Shields: http://208.84.114.253/0814kronfiremaps2.html |
| 9:17 | [Comment From saundie] our current temp is 61, so at 9:15am this a good sign for overall highs today |
| 9:17 | Brian Shields: Mike Mohler from Calfire now on KRON 4 says they're hoping to get a line around the fire today |
| 9:17 | [Comment From Elaine] Hi, here in Gilroy conditions same as last evening--smoke odor and limited visibility, sky grey, sun broke through our fog at about 8:45, very light breeze. My very best hopes for safe day for all. |
| 9:18 | [Comment From Retired FF] This is true Brian, but once they have their containment lines in place and with all of the resources around it would take a major blow out, to loose this thing. |
| 9:18 | [Comment From Christa] Just got off the phone with Calfire info. Looking at the road closures he said that we should prepare to not be able to return if we leave. We are not threateaned here on our part of Empire, but the road closures could make it hard to return. Their map of the roads is pretty sketchy....lots of "unnamed" roads. |
| 9:19 | [Comment From Greg] Any news on Bonny Doon Winery. Ryan is a friend of ours and we have not heard the latest. I am on Summit/Bear Creek. Lots of air traffic. |
| 9:20 | [Comment From Martha] Greg: Lower Pine Flat road, near the Winery, was evacuated on Thursday afternoon. Some people, however, have refused to leave. |
| 9:21 | Brian Shields: Mohler says "Today is going to be a big turning point for us on this fire." |
| 9:21 | [Comment From Guest #2] @ Bonny Doon resident -- Unfortunately for SF Bay area, I think that local news coverage is not very great... |
| 9:22 | [Comment From Glen] What way the smoke is blowning Brian |
| 9:22 | [Comment From saundie] thank you KRON for this great blog and real updates from real people |
| 9:23 | Brian Shields: Thank you Saundie and to everyone in this community sharing information |
| 9:23 | [Comment From Martha] Any update on the fire threat to Thayer road (off of Bonny Doon road)? |
| 9:23 | [Comment From Retired FF] I say the the major turning point was last night when the marine layer came in, but today, if they can hold their containment lines, they'll have this thing licked... Great work by all! |
| 9:23 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] The Sheriff let me walk through the road block yesterday at B.D. Road to get to my house in the Country Estates area. I am going to attempt it today and will update with info. I had a fire crew in front of my house on Country Estates Terrace |
| 9:23 | Brian Shields: Let us know Tony and most of all STAY SAFE! |
| 9:24 | [Comment From Guest #2] oops again. ... @ BD resident... SF Bay area, local news coverage is not very great ON WEEKENDS.. |
| 9:24 | Brian Shields: Normally I sleep in.. but this is too big |
| 9:24 | [Comment From Martha] Tony: How is lower Pine Flat road doing? |
| 9:24 | [Comment From Suzanne] Tony: when are you going to attempt to get to your house? |
| 9:25 | Brian Shields: Saundie... Gary the producer is calling you now |
| 9:25 | Brian Shields: We can all hear Saundie on tv in the 9:30 block |
| 9:25 | [Comment From cathy] there are so many fire crews on bonny doon rd loop... they are there to take care of it and protect our homes... they are telling us what to do to help with prevention around our homes... many people have stayed and feel very safe and actually, much more sane that those who are out and don't know |
| 9:25 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian -- what is your schedule for the blog this weekend? I know BART has you busy (we're jealous of bart)... and there's only one 'you'.... BUT we neeeeed you!! |
| 9:26 | Brian Shields: I'm not sure... I may come back in this evening... and I will do 8-10 a.m. tomorrow. Sunday night probably not since I'll be here live blogging BART at 4am Monday |
| 9:26 | [Comment From Tony Katshen] I'm going to try and get in on Bike, if they let me, around noon. Lower Pine flat is OK and it was just really smoky and a lot of ash was falling |
| 9:26 | [Comment From Dianne] Thanks for the interview with Linton Johnson from BART detailing what the third union is holding out for. (I have heard many intierviews on other stations, but yours actually had details.) With so many people having to give up work hrs, take pay cuts or loosing jobs altogether, I have no sympathay for their stand. |
| 9:27 | Brian Shields: Thanks Diane. ATU is holding a 10am News Conference. I have Da Lin on his way to that so we will have both sides tonight |
| 9:27 | [Comment From saundie] just spoke with Gary, says he will call back around 9:30....wish me luck, not very seasoned with this type of stuff |
| 9:27 | Brian Shields: You'll be great Saundie... just tell us what you see |
| 9:27 | [Comment From Martha] Cathy: That's great news. I live on lower Pine Flat (near the winery) and evacuated on Thursday afternoon. |
| 9:27 | [Comment From Suzanne] BTW: Brian...this blog is unbelievable!!! For those of us "locked out" of our homes...it is a lifeline!!! |
| 9:27 | [Comment From Greg] Thank you Martha! |
| 9:28 | Brian Shields: Thanks for participating with us Suzanne... and Martha... and everyone |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Martha] This forum is a godsend. I would be lost without it. |
| 9:28 | [Comment From Dianne] Great - I will watch tonight. |
| 9:29 | [Comment From Glen] always count on you Brian and Kron4 news |
| 9:29 | Brian Shields: Thanks for the kind words.. but the power of this forum is you guys... I'm just directing traffic.. |
| 9:29 | [Comment From Guest #2] Could Kimberlee come in this evening to blog? Where's Sacramento-Matt when we need him! (lol - he saved us last year during the Summit fire blogging when Brian had to sleep) |
| 9:30 | Brian Shields: Kimmie needs a day off. We all have a big week ahead of us Matthew got a job out of his work with us... he now runs the web site for Fox40 in Sacramento |
| 9:30 | [Comment From Suzanne] BIG RAISE for Brian!!!! |
| 9:30 | Brian Shields: LOL. Nah, I love doing this |
| 9:30 | [Comment From Mike] Is there a way to tell the location and orientation of the live camera in the USTREAM box? |
| 9:31 | Brian Shields: It's a helicopter so he's constantly shifting positiions. |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Martha] I am going to try to get into lower Pine Flat road later today. Brian, will you be on again later this evening? |
| 9:31 | Brian Shields: Okay you guys talked me into it. I'll be back 5-7pm today |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Christa] You have done an AWESOME job! |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Guest] I want to say Linton Johnson needs to get his story straight. He's says it's all on the union for the strike. BART knew if they imposed their 1yr terms and conditions of employment that it would force the hand of the union TO strike. He's says they need to stop the bleeding...well how about all the revnue the BART will lose daily if the workers go on strike. I think it be alot more money lost through ridership than the so called $70,000 a day to negotiate. Also the inconvience to the public in the Bay Area. BART and ATU need to get back to the table and hammers this out! |
| 9:31 | [Comment From Guest #2] Reminder fm yesterday: someone wrote: Just to let people know the shelter could use blankets, towels, food for the animals, not only dogs, cats, but chickens, geese, pigs, horses and others. The drop off for all these things is 2200 7th Ave. Santa Cruz thank you |
| 9:32 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that reminder. Also google Santa Cruz County volunteers... they are coordinating help from folks |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Guest #2] Whoo HOOO!! Brian is our hero!! |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Glen] How many hour did Brian worked? |
| 9:32 | [Comment From Glen] ok see you 5-7pm today |
| 9:33 | Brian Shields: Haha no let's be serious. I'm just sitting here in San Francisco. The real heroes are the men and women out on the fire lines... |
| 9:33 | [Comment From Debbie] Hear that the Bonny Doon Rd entrance just past Smith Grade is the hardest one - they're not letting anyone through. My brother is currently home - we live next door to the winery - no problems there - although hearing of a scorched leaf on Pine Flat is not encouraging. Managed to evade the blockade on Thursday, but the smoke was so intense on Friday, decided to leave. Thanks for having a place we can communicate. - So Ryan's wine tasting room and vineyard are all OK! |
| 9:33 | [Comment From Gilroy resident] A good friend lives on Empire Grade. Talked to her, briefly, awhile ago. She was leaving to tend to a family crisis elsewhere, so apparently the area where she lives must be below the fire area. I still can't place the areas. I even lived for a year, many years ago, in Bonny Doon. I remember Lockheed was up the hill. |
| 9:33 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian - what time is this Liveblog session closing? |
| 9:34 | Brian Shields: I'll be off at 10. I'll be back 5-7 tonight |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Elaine] Brian, thank you, thank you!! You provide a very vital service to all of the people out of their homes, and all of us who are concerned! |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Martha] I think it's time to create those thank you signs for Calfire, just like we did last year during the Martin fire. |
| 9:34 | [Comment From Glen] When is the next update on the fire from the fire chief in Santa Cruz Brian |
| 9:35 | Brian Shields: The next media briefing I know about is with the Governor at 10am. KRON 4's Jeff Pierce will be there |
| 9:35 | Brian Shields: Here comes Saundie |
| 9:36 | [Comment From Glen] ok 10am Thanks Brian |
| 9:36 | [Comment From Guest #2] Go Saundi |
| 9:37 | [Comment From Glen] Saundie is taking your spot you can on back at 5pm is that right have a rest time see you than Brian |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Christa] Great job Saundie!!!!!! |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Guest #2] Brian!!! - on-air graphic had 4800 acres -- need to update that! |
| 9:39 | Brian Shields: I told the producer as soon as it came up.. |
| 9:39 | Brian Shields: Saundie's a star! Thank you so much... and thanks for mentioning the blog |
| 9:39 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Is there a way to get live kron, for us out of the area? |
| 9:40 | Brian Shields: That's our live stream of all of our newscasts |
| 9:40 | [Comment From cathy] that video looks as if the helicopter may be over the morelli ranch off pine flat looking out towards the ocean by the way the traffic is moving and the direction of the fire and ravines... just a guess |
| 9:40 | [Comment From Glen] Hello Saundie |
| 9:40 | [Comment From Elaine] Super job Saundi! |
| 9:40 | [Comment From Guest #2] Saundie -- y'done good!! |
| 9:40 | [Comment From BCCountryClub&Golf Res.] brian better watch out saundie may be takin his job, Good Job Saundie ! |
| 9:41 | [Comment From Glen] Karen do you know the family of Robin and Craig Lindquist there in Boise they are from Santa Cruz too |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] thank you Brian for the site. |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Glen - name sounds familiar |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Suzanne] Saundie is a STAR!!! |
| 9:44 | [Comment From saundie] hey, thanks ......that was a bit nerve racking...i need more coffee now. |
| 9:44 | Brian Shields: You were great! |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] My grandparents lived on Windham St in Santa Cruz. I probably couldn't even find the place now. It's been probably 40 years since I've been there. |
| 9:44 | [Comment From Guest #2] I surely miss the 'live helicopter' views. Do they have the weekend off? Hmph... oh well. |
| 9:45 | Brian Shields: So about another 15 minutes this morning... then I will be back 5-7 tonight... |
| 9:45 | [Comment From saundie] i am still unclear about the closure on empire grade, can you get through down by the university? |
| 9:46 | Brian Shields: I keep waiting for Calfire to put out a new map so I can update Jonathan Bloom's google earth file.. Hope to have that ready for the afternoon blogging |
| 9:46 | [Comment From Shelly] You can still get up Empire Grade but not past Felton Empire |
| 9:47 | [Comment From WGK] Smoke has finally made it up to us near summit road - a bit hazy & can smells smokey |
| 9:48 | Brian Shields: To recap for those who heard Saundie on TV and joined our live blog... the fire is 30% contained, 6,800 acres. 1500 firefighters. They hope to have a line all the way around the fire by the end of the day today. |
| 9:48 | [Comment From WGK] It appears I may need more coffee before attempting to type! |
| 9:48 | Brian Shields: I'm just glad they don't dock me for my live blogging typos... |
| 9:48 | [Comment From Glen] Karen they live on a ranch there in Boise they lived in Santa Cruz and they have lots of family and friends hope they know about the fire Lindquist family ? |
| 9:48 | [Comment From saundie] okay thanks...Brian..thanks for coming back @ 5PM. this blog is the best resource for sure. enjoy your break and get some rest |
| 9:48 | [Comment From cathy] If you show BD id i have heard that sherrif's will let you in on that side for valid reasons but want to hear that you are coming out again... it was said yesterday that residents off Empire between Felton Empire and Alba could go home, today i read that that had been changed as of last night so, the answer is to go ask the sherrif at the block on empire... |
| 9:49 | Brian Shields: And please tell the sheriff's deputies and the firefighters and everyone working this how much we appreciate their hard work.. |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Glen] So the smoke the blowning in the North east is that right Brian going towards the Summit Rd |
| 9:50 | Brian Shields: I have not heard confirmation that it has shifted to the northeast... that was what they were fearing yesterday. Can anyone tell us the direction from up there? |
| 9:50 | [Comment From Martha] I am going to try to get through the blockade near the Bonny Doon winery at lower Pine Flat road later today. |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Gilroy resident] Enjoyed your report Saundie, you did great. |
| 9:51 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, Idaho] Brian - no heli coverage today? |
| 9:51 | Brian Shields: Please don't take unnecessary risks Martha... we want to hear from you |
| 9:51 | [Comment From cathy] they are truly wonderful... and another good thing is that they are patrolling religiously... if one of us drives into a friend's driveway they come out of nowhere and ask for our id and our purpose... i don't believe that anyone who has left has to worry about 'looters' |
| 9:52 | Brian Shields: That's so reassuring Cathy... |
| 9:52 | Brian Shields: We've had a shot off and on this morning... but we don't have as many in the air as yesterday on our pool feed |
| 9:52 | [Comment From Glen] Or Saundie about the smoke the North East towards the Summit Rd is that right |
| 9:52 | [Comment From saundie] very little wind, but the smoke is being pushed southeast, right towards pineridge |
| 9:52 | [Comment From cathy] i belive that at the low blockade, if you are let through it will be walking home from there... you might be able to drive through from the top |
| 9:52 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks for the update, Cathy. |
| 9:53 | [Comment From saundie] yes, that is what they did last year during the martin fire, most of our neighborhood left, and they were patrolling day and night, we were so thankful |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Guest] can the animal shelter use sheets? |
| 9:53 | [Comment From Shelly] There was a report of a looter in a black truck yesterday. My husband was pulled over and searched in his black truck. |
| 9:54 | Brian Shields: Thanks Shelly. We will ask about that... and security in general. that's a great angle. |
| 9:54 | [Comment From saundie] what area Shelly? |
| 9:55 | [Comment From Shelly] He was pulled over going up Empire Grade by the Airport. He is a contract employee for CDF. |
| 9:55 | [Comment From WGK] South-east seems right since hwy 17 runs north to south & we're on east side of 17. Monterey Bay can really skew your sense of direction. |
| 9:56 | Brian Shields: Oops wrong link.. |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Glen] What is % on the fire Brian or Saundie at 9:55am |
| 9:56 | Brian Shields: The latest numbers again 30% containment, 6,800 acres. 1500 firefighters |
| 9:56 | [Comment From Guest] My wife is asthmatic. we are concerned about the forecast wind direction for today. What can you tell me about the forecast for this afternoon? |
| 9:57 | Brian Shields: Here;s the latest from the National Weather Service.
Today: Patchy smoke. Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 78. North northwest wind between 10 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. |
| 9:57 | [Comment From Glen] Thanks Brian |
| 9:57 | [Comment From WGK] have a great day Brian - thanks for running this show! |
| 9:57 | [Comment From saundie] brian, you type much faster than I..... |
| 9:58 | Brian Shields: I hit the keys quickly but which key I hit can be problematic (a word I just typed three times) |
| 9:59 | Brian Shields: Alright everyone, time to get to work on my other job... weekend manager for the tv station. I will be back tonight on the live blog from 5-7 p.m. Please everyone stay safe |
| 9:59 | [Comment From Glen] All man no the winds no no no |
| 9:59 | [Comment From saundie] oh yes, could you add a spell check option, hee hee |

| Wildfires and BART Strike - Friday Evening | (08/14/2009) |
| 4:04 | Brian Shields: Good Afternoon. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this afternoon we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We're also talking about the impending BART strike. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below |
| 4:07 | [Comment From Martha] I heard on the news that the estimate for the fire to be contained is August 23rd. Does anyone have any other information? We are anxiously awaiting being able to return to our homes in Bonny Doon. |
| 4:07 | Brian Shields: I hadn't heard that... but it wouldn't surprise me that it would take a week or more to achieve full containment. |
| 4:07 | [Comment From gregg] any word on additional evacuations from the lockheed fire? rumors abound that felton is next. but I also heard the wind is shifting |
| 4:07 | Brian Shields: Winds are expected to shift tomorrow... |
| 4:08 | [Comment From gregg] awesome video and love the coverage BTW. |
| 4:08 | Brian Shields: Thanks Gregg |
| 4:09 | [Comment From eric] this fire is crazy |
| 4:09 | [Comment From gregg] anyone asking cal fire command why they pulled the six fixed wing aircraft yesterday? I heard mulitple calls on their radios for more resources in that arena |
| 4:09 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks Brian for the coverage. Getting information is problematic. |
| 4:10 | Brian Shields: That's one of the great things about this forum. Collectively we all have more information that I do or any of us individually |
| 4:10 | Brian Shields: I will say I've heard nothing about a possible evacuation of Felton |
| 4:11 | [Comment From Martha] I have been glued to my computer all day. Trying to find out the latest info. |
| 4:12 | [Comment From Marc] Thanks for the feed |
| 4:12 | [Comment From Chelsea] Martha, where in BD are you? |
| 4:13 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] Hi Brian! KRON has been doing great, one request, is there anyway KRON can keep the fire video up like in a small box during commercails as well? |
| 4:13 | Brian Shields: That's beyond my Pay Grade Al but I will suggest it.. |
| 4:13 | [Comment From Chelsea] Brian, it is on the CDF website that the expected containment date is the 23rd. That's where I saw it. |
| 4:14 | [Comment From Martha] I am now in Ben Lomond. We evacuated yesterday. |
| 4:14 | [Comment From Martha] We live on Pine Flat road near the corner of Martin and Pine Flat. |
| 4:14 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] hehe, just a suggestion, as much live video as possible! |
| 4:14 | Brian Shields: That we'll do Al |
| 4:15 | Brian Shields: If you're watching TV right now Jonathan Bloom has made a very detailed Google Earth map. I'm working on making that file available to you guys so you can explore the roads and what's closed. Give me a few on that.. |
| 4:19 | [Comment From Martha] Santa Cruz Pet Resort has all of our pets (2 dogs and 3 cats). They have been great during this crisis. |
| 4:19 | [Comment From MH] That was a really great map!! |
| 4:20 | Brian Shields: Okay here's the map Jonathan used http://bit.ly/2q6GNI Right click, save the target to your desktop. Then double click off your desktop. It will only work if you already have Google Earth installed |
| 4:20 | [Comment From Al Boe (BNO News)] wow, i just read from your guys twitter that the suspect in the toll shooting wants the death penalty? wow did i read that right? |
| 4:20 | Brian Shields: That's correct Al |
| 4:20 | [Comment From Chelsea] That would be awesome, Brian, to see that map. People like Martha (who is evacuated) can see how close (or not) the fire is to their home. From the last map that I saw on the CDF website (which hasn't been updated yet) it seems that the first is still a ways away from Empire Grade. Even Pine Flat seems to be a ways from it at some points. I know that that is where they are saying they want to keep the fire from crossing at all costs. |
| 4:20 | [Comment From leeanne] what direction is the UStream camera looking at now? |
| 4:20 | [Comment From Martha] One of our neighbors made it through the road block near Bonny Doon road and Ice Cream Grade road earlier today. They let her through to pick up some more things. One of the fire officials said at the road block that they have a lot of attention on Bonny Doon road due to the number of houses there. |
| 4:21 | Brian Shields: That's good to hear Martha. Please stay safe |
| 4:21 | Brian Shields: That I really don't know from eyeballing it leeanne. |
| 4:22 | Brian Shields: Also we're looking at pictures from kcra3 in Sacramento of another big fire now burning in Yuba County north of Sacto |
| 4:24 | Brian Shields: let me know if anyone has problems with that google earth link |
| 4:24 | [Comment From leeanne] this might put a damper on tourists visiting the area this weekend..... |
| 4:25 | Brian Shields: Yeah this isn't a really good time to be visiting the Bay Area.. between the fires and the impending BART Strike... and the hotel workers contract expires this weekend. |
| 4:25 | [Comment From Chelsea] Martha, I'm glad that you have someone to stay with. My parents live off of Pine Flat (off Empire Grade) and they still haven't had anyone come by or call to ask them to evacuate. |
| 4:26 | Brian Shields: We have heard Empire Grade is closed... Please make sure your parents don't wait too long to get out Chelsea. We'll keep them in our prayers |
| 4:26 | [Comment From Patricia] I am in Santa Cruz Seabright area and from my Victorian upstairs window I can no longer see the tree line of Bonny Doon. Complete whiteout and the smoke in the city is getting really bad. I had to shut my house up. Love my fellow Bonny Doon residents (was one until last year). Take care of each other.. |
| 4:27 | Brian Shields: We've mostly been talking about the fires so far this afternoon but this is also a forum for anyone wanting to vent or share plans for Monday when the BART Strike starts. Mark Jones just reported a few minutes ago there are no talks set for this weekend at least so far |
| 4:29 | [Comment From leeanne] If I had to commute into the city from a distance, I'd just get a room for the week. |
| 4:29 | Brian Shields: With the hope that it will be over in a week... there's no guarantee of that |
| 4:30 | [Comment From leeanne] the smoke looks really bad from santa cruz to across the bay into monterey and pg and carmel, etc |
| 4:30 | [Comment From Guest] It's so expensive though. |
| 4:30 | [Comment From Martha] Chelsea: We got the order to evacuate by phone yesterday at Noon. Shortly after that a sheriff came to the house and told us that we had an hour to get out. It took us about two hour to corral all the cats. Hope your parents stay safe. |
| 4:31 | [Comment From Chelsea] Thank you Brian, but they're fine. They have been keeping an eye on how close the fire is to their portion of Empire Grade. It's still quite a ways away. They also have their cars and truck packed up and a place to stay as soon as it's time. :) |
| 4:31 | Brian Shields: That's good to hear Chelsea. Let them know a lot of people are rooting for them.. |
| 4:34 | [Comment From leeanne] I've seen a set of 2 towers in a compound in bonny doon off empire grade. they're not radio towers, they look like they're for construction of something. does anyone know what that site might be? |
| 4:34 | [Comment From Chelsea] Thank you Martha. I hope that your kitties are doing okay. :) I'm glad that you have a place to stay. Thank you again, Brian. I found this blog really helpful last year and was the eyes and ears for my parents since they had to evacuate last year. If you look at last year's fire, you can see that the edge of it was super close to their home. Glad that no homes seem to be too close this year. So far. Crossing fingers. |
| 4:34 | Brian Shields: Absolutely agree Chelsea... and the value of this forum is that you guys know what's going on much better than I do... and we can share with each other.. |
| 4:35 | Brian Shields: BTW, Lt. Governor John Garamandi issued a state of emergency today for the Santa Cruz Mountains..
DAVENPORT – Acting Governor John Garamendi today signed a proclamation of State of Emergency for Santa Cruz County. The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors requested the emergency proclamation which authorizes the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) to provide financial relief for emergency actions and for the restoration of public facilities and infrastructure.
“A major fire disaster has engulfed Santa Cruz County, and they are in great need of resources to bolster what is being done at the local level to fight these fires,” said Lieutenant Governor Garamendi. “I have toured the damage and visited the operational center, and this fire is far from over. I will continue to closely monitor the situation and take all necessary actions to reduce the damage and keep residents out of harm’s way.” |
| 4:36 | Brian Shields: If you're monitoring the Calfire radio channels, they're talking about a flare up near the bottom of the canyon right now.. |
| 4:36 | [Comment From Martha] We live near the corner of Martin and Pine Flat so the Martin fire was quite a worry. Not that I am not worried now. Here's hoping for a safe outcome for all concerned. |
| 4:37 | [Comment From Chelsea] I wanted to ask, btw: is there a place to bring things like bottled water, snacks, etc.? If you know about this (or anyone else does), can we also find out what they are in need of? I know that the firefighters are really working hard, obviously. The volunteers and firefighters don't take breaks during this time so I would love to find out what I can bring to help them out and say "thank you" in person. |
| 4:37 | [Comment From Chelsea] Yeah, Martha - that was a close one for you, too! I'm glad that you and your family are safe. |
| 4:37 | [Comment From Matthew (FOX40.com)] For perspective on how large this fire is, 1 acre is about 90 yards on a typical football field -- or, one football field is roughly 1.32 acres. |
| 4:38 | Brian Shields: Hey Matthew.... do you guys have any more information on this Yuba County fire? |
| 4:39 | Brian Shields: They're now calling for more helicopter drops on this flare-up in the bottom of the canyon |
| 4:39 | [Comment From Martha] Chelsea: I think the fire station on Empire Grade road near Felton Empire road may be a good bet. |
| 4:39 | [Comment From Matthew (FOX40.com)] 130 acres, 20 homes threatened, evacuations in order. |
| 4:39 | [Comment From Jeff] Hi all, |
| 4:39 | Brian Shields: Thanks Matthew... thanks for joining our conversation Jeff |
| 4:39 | [Comment From Jeff] Anyone know hoe close the fire line is getting to Empire Grade |
| 4:40 | [Comment From Jeff] My Dad's house is there |
| 4:40 | [Comment From Chelsea] That's what I was thinking, but isn't it closed off at that point? Can I get up Felton Empire from Felton? |
| 4:40 | [Comment From Chelsea] Where at on Empire? |
| 4:40 | [Comment From Matthew (FOX40.com)] FOX40 News has a crew headed to the Yuba Fire. |
| 4:40 | Brian Shields: Thanks Matthew... we were looking at chopper pictures from your competition earlier. It looks pretty massive |
| 4:41 | [Comment From Jeff] He lives at Empire Grade and Vick Rd |
| 4:41 | [Comment From Chelsea] (that was directed to Jeff) |
| 4:42 | [Comment From Martha] I believe you can get up Felton Empire, Chelsea. Ice Cream Grade is closed. |
| 4:42 | [Comment From Jeff] Hey Brian, I just want to thank you and your live feed, it is amazing and a great service, Cal Fire info has been BAD at best! |
| 4:42 | [Comment From Matthew (FOX40.com)] It's a good-sized fire. Not saying it's "massive," though. 10,000 acres sounds a lot larger than what we're dealing with here. |
| 4:42 | [Comment From leeanne] which canyon flared up? |
| 4:43 | Brian Shields: I'm trying to track that down Leeanne. I'm on the Calfire radio channel. One person said if they don't knock down this flare-up "today will be all for nought" |
| 4:43 | [Comment From leeanne] just think that 15 years from now (if that) we can watch google earth live. |
| 4:44 | [Comment From Chelsea] Thank you Martha. :) Brian, did you get that Google map up? I don't see where to find the link. I wanted to see where Jeff's dad's house is in relation to the fire line. And Martha's, too. Thank you! |
| 4:45 | Brian Shields: Chelsea http://bit.ly/2q6GNI Follow that link. Save the target to your desktop then launch it and it should bring up Google Earth (you must have GE installed or it won't work) |
| 4:45 | [Comment From leeanne] calfire santa cruz? |
| 4:45 | [Comment From Jeff] Thanks Chelsea!!! :) |
| 4:45 | [Comment From Chelsea] Oh, duh! :D I see it at the bottom of the page. Thank you so much! |
| 4:45 | [Comment From leeanne] I was listening to cal fire CZU for san mateo/santa cruz but yesterday all I was picking up was the altamont fire. |
| 4:45 | [Comment From Martha] Is there any way to increase the magnification of the Google Earth map? |
| 4:45 | Brian Shields: You can zoom in on it... |
| 4:46 | Brian Shields: using the Google Earth controls.. |
| 4:46 | [Comment From Chelsea] So, what is the pink outline? I see that the red area in the center must be the fire, right? How about the perimeter around that that's in pink? And then the red line on Empire Grade and Pine Flat? Thank you. :D |
| 4:47 | Brian Shields: Jonathan Bloom built this map. I believe that's the outer perimeter of the fire operations area |
| 4:49 | Brian Shields: It appears this flare up I've been listening to is in the Scott's Creek area.. |
| 4:49 | [Comment From Chelsea] Thank you. :) |
| 4:49 | [Comment From Misty Dawn] The red lines are roads that are closed in the SC hills |
| 4:49 | [Comment From Chelsea] Sorry to ask such silly questions. |
| 4:50 | Brian Shields: There are no silly questions Chelsea.. we're all trying to figure this out together.. |
| 4:53 | [Comment From leeanne] that looks like i5 fire |
| 4:53 | [Comment From Jeff] BRIAN, this is GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, having an evacuated father in Bonny Doon, this has been such a service. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! It has helped my 85 y/o father so much. |
| 4:53 | Brian Shields: Please send him our regards Jeff |
| 4:53 | [Comment From DB] Just to let people know the shelter could use blankets, towels, food for the animals, not only dogs, cats, but chickens, geese, pigs, horses and others. The drop off for all these things is 2200 7th Ave. Santa Cruz thank you |
| 4:54 | [Comment From Chelsea] I say it playfully since I often ask questions that make me laugh once i realize that the answer is more obvious. :) So Jeff and Martha, did you two see your areas on the map? |
| 4:54 | [Comment From Martha] I don't know Google Earth. Sorry. Where are the magnification controls? |
| 4:54 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that resource DB |
| 4:55 | Brian Shields: There's a slider on the right side of the screen. You can also use the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out (this is all pc stuff. If you have a mac, the controls are different) |
| 4:55 | Brian Shields: Calfire is confirming to our desk that the winds are shifting in the Scott's Creek Area. |
| 4:57 | [Comment From kate radford] all i see is snow |
| 4:57 | [Comment From DB] Also, the shelter could use dog kennels/crates for the dogs |
| 4:58 | [Comment From booger] back on BART...what about a rider revolt and stop using the service altogehter...now and after the strike. force them to lower fares and provide better service. The fare from Livermore to SF is over $11 round trip....that is more than driving |
| 4:59 | Brian Shields: Rider revolts sound good.. but seldom work in my experience. Remember the baseball strike? Everyone was going to revolt... and then they came back and the crowds were larger than ever |
| 5:00 | [Comment From Sakthi] Why can't bart employee share the pain with us for sometime |
| 5:00 | [Comment From Martha] Thanks, Brian, I got it now. The fire looks closer to Bonny Doon Road loop which is not a good thing since it is a heavily populated area. |
| 5:00 | Brian Shields: That's why Calfire has said they are concentrating resources to protect that Bonny Doon Road inhabitated area. Let's hope they succeed. |
| 5:01 | [Comment From booger] that is because most people are weak and with no willpower. if people stood up found better ways to get to work....such as ferry, bike, carpooling, telecommunting, walking to work (yes, living close to work) we would not have to worry about this |
| 5:02 | Brian Shields: Once again most of the talk today is focused on the fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains but we have also opened the floor up to talk about the BART Strike. I know a lot of people are frustrated with both sides... but I would really like to hear how people are planning to get around starting Monday morning. |
| 5:03 | Brian Shields: On TV they've gone to Inside Edition but here online we will keep talking fire and BART all the way until 7:00 p.m. I may also come back in tomorrow morning for another session during the KRON 4 Morning News... |
| 5:03 | [Comment From Sakthi] Planning to work from home. |
| 5:04 | Brian Shields: That's what a lot of people are planning... some are even talking about gathering at Starbucks or some other public wifi location for collaborative efforts |
| 5:04 | [Comment From Sakthi] bart provider any alternate transportation? any idea |
| 5:04 | Brian Shields: BART will be running buses from selected stations.. |
| 5:05 | [Comment From tricia] Is CAl fire allowing local residents to volunteer? |
| 5:06 | Brian Shields: As far as I know they're not letting volunteers on the fire lines... you need specialized training for that. There are lots of volunteers being used to help deal with animals and to help people in the evacuation shelters and that sort of thing. I would coordinate that throught the Santa Cruz County office of emergency services.. |
| 5:06 | [Comment From leeanne] some moron in santa cruz had an outdoor fire pit going today. talk about stupid idea. |
| 5:06 | Brian Shields: Duhh. |
| 5:06 | Kimberlee Sakamoto: For those who are following the Santa Cruz Mountains Wildfire, refresh your page to see new videos in the player.
There's one from KRON 4's Dave Guingona about an animal rescue shelter taking in pets displaced by the wildfire.
There's also an interview by a Cal Fire spokesperson who says crews are gaining control over the fire. |
| 5:07 | [Comment From Sakthi] Or will they hire any temparory employee |
| 5:07 | [Comment From leeanne] I think they need to have some chartered "fun" buses from outlying areas. like coffee and bagels in the am ride and neck and back massages back to dublin or wherever |
| 5:07 | Brian Shields: As far as BART hiring replacements, it takes 90 days of training before you can operate a train... and let's hope this doesn't last 90 days |
| 5:07 | Brian Shields: I could use a back massage myself lol |
| 5:08 | Brian Shields: FYI, the chopper shot is going down on the fire page. They're having some maintenance issues |
| 5:08 | [Comment From leeanne] lol |
| 5:09 | Brian Shields: They are diverting some tankers from the Lockheed fire to the Yuba fire... |
| 5:09 | [Comment From leeanne] will the chopper be back up before nightfall? |
| 5:09 | Brian Shields: We're told it will be back at 6 assuming no major mechanical malfunction |
| 5:10 | [Comment From tricia] People should strike the strike and walk or ride A bike to work even after the strike is over! Or maybe the whole city should go on strike and take the day off to be with family! |
| 5:12 | [Comment From Sakthi] Thanks Brain for all your answers |
| 5:13 | Brian Shields: No thank you guys for your answers and ideas... I'm just directing traffic |
| 5:14 | Brian Shields: I just talked on the phone with Christine Connolly at the fire command post. She says the PIO is getting a briefing right now so we should have some updated info soon... hopefully in time for the newscast to return at 5:30 |
| 5:14 | [Comment From Super D] the DC-10 super tanker is working one of the fires |
| 5:14 | Brian Shields: Super D... did you just hear the report they were diverting one tanker from the Lockheed Fire to Yuba County? |
| 5:14 | Brian Shields: Welcome back my friend. |
| 5:15 | [Comment From Martha] Brian, that's great news that the crews are getting a handle on the fire. I hate to see it heading towards Bonny Doon road. |
| 5:15 | [Comment From Super D] they are hot fuleing the helos----No i just got here |
| 5:16 | Brian Shields: we;ve been listening to a lot of talk about helo drops in the Scott's Creek area where the winds are definitely picking up |
| 5:16 | Brian Shields: That's on the Calfire channel.. |
| 5:18 | [Comment From Super D] they are giving special instructions to all aircraft on how to get in and out of the fire |
| 5:18 | [Comment From Super D] the smoke is crazy in Santa Cruz |
| 5:18 | [Comment From leeanne] well it sounds like they're getting control of the fire according to the reports. |
| 5:19 | Brian Shields: I don't know about that leeanne... they seem pretty concerned on this Calfire channel.. |
| 5:22 | [Comment From Super D] they are using the cement plant by (bonny doon) as a land mark for one of the routes into the fire |
| 5:22 | [Comment From Chelsea] I had class at UCSC last week - I'm glad that it wasn't this week. The smoke must be really bad there. Or maybe it's above it... |
| 5:22 | Brian Shields: Air quality is a concern for a lot of people... even those not in direct danger from the fire |
| 5:24 | [Comment From Guest] Air quality is a concern for a lot of people... even those not in direct danger from the fire |
| 5:24 | Brian Shields: Didn't I just say that? |
| 5:24 | [Comment From A Foreigner] So the workers are required to cut hours, wages and everything... What about the Board of Directors??? Have they ever given up their pay and parachutes??
Americans are just ABOUT ME ME ME, NO justices!!!!!
They only care to blame the workers –(4 years of frozen wages)
Who cares if those high paying Execs are just seating there and draining the resources
I am so glade that I was just contemplating... HA HA |
| 5:24 | [Comment From Super D] The air is going to be a big problem |
| 5:26 | Brian Shields: If you're just joining us, Good Afternoon. I'm KRON 4 Online News Manager Brian Shields and this afternoon we're talking about the Lockheed Fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We're also talking about the impending BART strike. Please join our conversation by entering your name or handle and your comment in the slot below |
| 5:27 | Brian Shields: Christine is teasing new information... let's all watch together right after these commercials.. |
| 5:29 | [Comment From Lars] Glad to see the KRON chopper headed back....I live over the hill from the fire in Boulder Creek and like seeing the live feeds to keep track of the progress. |
| 5:29 | [Comment From carolyn stevens] no one needs a increase in wages now with the recession especially the bart workers. i vote no for strike or increase in wages. |
| 5:30 | Brian Shields: Carolyn... I'm not taking sides here.. but the unions aren't asking for an increase in wages. They say the new work rules would mean a pay cut for them.. |
| 5:31 | [Comment From Robb] You guys showed a really good overlay of the Lockheed fire onto a topo map. I don't see it on your web site. Is it viewable? This is something all BD'rs would like to see. I live on Emerald Forest Lane. There are still plenty of people up here who haven't left. |
| 5:32 | Brian Shields: We have a link to the Google Earth file.. if you have google earth installed, you can install the fire from here http://bit.ly/2q6GNI |
| 5:32 | Brian Shields: *install the file |
| 5:34 | [Comment From Super D] dont install the fire Brian that would be bad |
| 5:34 | Brian Shields: No kidding. My fingers just automatically type fire these days... |
| 5:35 | Brian Shields: Okay here comes Christine's update |
| 5:36 | [Comment From Robb] I don't Have GE installed. I will try to do it now and come back to you. Thanks...this is great real time...Fire is way Bad!!!! |
| 5:36 | [Comment From kg] is there a mac-friendly way to open the map file up in GE? Can't get it to open. |
| 5:37 | Brian Shields: I am not a mac expert. Can anyone help kg? |
| 5:38 | Brian Shields: Okay, here's what Christine had.... Calfire is confirming the new hot spots in the Scott's Creek and Last Chance areas. they're adding dozers and hand crews to the area in addition to the helo drops |
| 5:38 | Brian Shields: A lot of people have been asking about Bonny Doon. Calfire says the fire is at least two miles from the homes and buildings on Bonny Doon Road. |
| 5:38 | [Comment From bonny dooner] make sure you have a recent version of GE |
| 5:39 | Brian Shields: Tonight firefighters will be fortifying the lines.. hoping to raise the containment figure by tomorrow morning |
| 5:40 | Brian Shields: And here's the amazing info. They're aiming for full containment by August 23rd. a week from sunday. Wtih the fire totally out by the 30th... two weeks from sunday |
| 5:40 | [Comment From bonny dooner] any news about thayer road |
| 5:40 | Brian Shields: They didn't mention Thayer Road specifically |
| 5:41 | [Comment From bonny dooner] thayer runs west from BD road, where many fire trucks are stationed |
| 5:41 | [Comment From Chelsea] That's all good news so far. We will take what we can get. |
| 5:41 | [Comment From WGK] On east side of hwy 17 - LOTS of air traffic heading over to fire area all afternoon. |
| 5:41 | Brian Shields: Thanks for that update. WGK |
| 5:42 | Brian Shields: From my looking at the map, it appears the fire is still well away from Thayer Road... if it's two miles from Bonny Doon Road |
| 5:43 | [Comment From bonny dooner] thanks for passing on the updates so quickly |
| 5:43 | [Comment From Martha] Agreed, Chelsea. We will take what we can get. |
| 5:43 | [Comment From Ca fireman] This weekend is going to be dangerous for firefighters with off shore winds and lower humidities the fire may make a bit of a bigger run |
| 5:43 | [Comment From bob] What's the air quality like around the Boardwalk? Was planning on spending the weekend there, but now not so sure ... thanks for any info! |
| 5:43 | Brian Shields: We're haring about a lot of smoke in Santa Cruz Bob. If your family has asthma or other breathing issues I would think twice |
| 5:44 | Brian Shields: Ca Fireman... we're hearing the same thing... about a shift in winds that could make the area even dryer and hotter |
| 5:44 | [Comment From WGK] Air quality in Soquel & Capitola (south of boradwalk) was not good today - smoke looked like fog coming in & could smell in the air |
| 5:44 | [Comment From Guest] i went through my audio file its sounds like they might have lost a barn and some sort of 2 story towers ?? |
| 5:45 | Brian Shields: My voice will be on tv in a couple of minutes... |
| 5:45 | [Comment From Ca fireman] I have a link of a picture of the fire from space if you could pass it along to the news dept |
| 5:45 | Brian Shields: I'm getting a dead link... |
| 5:47 | [Comment From Bob] Appreciate the info, very helpful! |
| 5:47 | [Comment From Guest] the boardwalk is a mess |
| 5:49 | Brian Shields: Thanks... and thanks for the work of all the firefighters out there on the lines today |
| 5:49 | [Comment From WGK] Hey Brian - heard rumor earllier that SC Fairgrounds are completely full w/livestock & cannot take more - any news on that? |
| 5:49 | [Comment From Ca fireman] looks like the news crew had it all along |
| 5:51 | Brian Shields: I have heard the same thing.. but there are additional resources for the animals. http://www.scanimalservices.us/ is offering some of the coordinatioin |
| 5:51 | [Comment From Ca fireman] thanks i am a volunteer firefighter. But have a lot of friends on the front lines |
| 5:51 | [Comment From Betony] That's an amazing shot Ca Fireman.... thanks |
| 5:52 | Brian Shields: I just forwarded it to the newsroom.. |
| 5:52 | [Comment From WGK] Great - I know a few stables that have open stalls - I'll contact them |
| 5:52 | Brian Shields: Thanks for the help WGK. That's why this is such a great community resource. |
| 5:53 | [Comment From leeanne] the boardwalk is always a mess! lol |
| 5:53 | Brian Shields: Oh come on, I love the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk... but this might not the weekend if the smoky conditions persist |
| 5:53 | [Comment From Super D] well true |
| 5:55 | [Comment From WGK] I was with you during the Summit Fire last year - close to our house. Thanks SO MUCH to you and all the people contributing to info on here. And a GEAT BIG THANKS to all the FIREFIGHTERS!!! |
| 5:56 | Kimberlee Sakamoto: You're very welcome, WGK. Thanks for joining our conversation again this year. Stay safe out there! |
| 5:56 | Kimberlee Sakamoto: And for those of you missing the great Brian Shields, hold on, he'll be back in a sec! |
| 5:56 | [Comment From Betony] 2 years in a row animal evacuation....i can imaging the livestock trying to figure out fire drills )) |
| 5:56 | [Comment From leeanne] it might take 2 weeks for the fire to be totally out? that seems like a long time....is it? |
| 5:57 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, ID] Sure hope the ER's are staffed well. Poor people with allergies and lung problems. |
| 5:57 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, ID] I MISS the boardwalk and ocean. Never thought I would. |
| 5:57 | [Comment From Super D] something must be going on the 17 I can hear sirens |
| 5:57 | [Comment From Ca fireman] not really for a fire like that |
| 5:57 | [Comment From WGK] On the large animal side, it's tough for us w/no truck & trailer but we have great resources up here in the mountains! |
| 5:57 | [Comment From Martha] Hi Kimberlee. Were you on last year during the Martin fire? |
| 5:58 | Kimberlee Sakamoto: Hi Martha! Yes, I was here last year. |
| 5:58 | [Comment From Ca fireman] the issue here is there is no fire breaks there and the trees are so close and big you cannot cut much of a fireline. |
| 5:58 | [Comment From leeanne] so is davenport safe? |
| 5:59 | [Comment From Martha] I remember you. This the second year in a row we in Bonny Doon have been through this. |
| 5:59 | Brian Shields: Thanks so much Kimberlee. I had to reboot my entire machine |
| 5:59 | Brian Shields: We are a team here at KRON4.com |
| 6:00 | [Comment From Super D] davenport should be fine |
| 6:00 | [Comment From leeanne] I'm surprised santa cruz has gone so long without major fires. in socal it's like a yearly event |
| 6:00 | Kimberlee Sakamoto: Definitely, and we're a family here on the blog.
Martha (and the rest of the folks in the wildfire areas), so sorry you're having to go through this again. Stay safe. We'll try to bring you the latest developments to keep you ready. |
| 6:00 | Brian Shields: My computer crashed when I was trying to get this link for you. It's where you can register to volunteer to help with the fire efforts... http://bit.ly/AQqMt |
| 6:00 | Brian Shields: That's through the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County. |
| 6:01 | [Comment From Ca fireman] the other issue is you can see the spot fires on the screen trees like that will throw hot embers 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile and start more fires |
| 6:01 | [Comment From WGK] Hwy 17 - traffi collision @ glenwood. CHP traffic incident info page is a great resource! |
| 6:01 | [Comment From Super D] they are sending equipment to miller ridge |
| 6:02 | [Comment From leeanne] what direction is the fire moving? |
| 6:02 | Brian Shields: Well it depends on what part of the fire.. but generally to the south and east.. |
| 6:02 | Brian Shields: Thanks for the Miller Ridge info.. |
| 6:03 | [Comment From WGK] Last year we took a few crates of Gatorade & boxes of Powerbars to our local CDF station - these items are very much appreciated by the guys & gals out there working the fires. |
| 6:03 | Brian Shields: Great idea WGK |
| 6:03 | [Comment From Martha] A branch of the fire is moving towards Bonny Doon road. Leanne, what area are you interested in? |
| 6:05 | Brian Shields: Just to confirm what we heard a half hour ago... the fire is still at least two miles from Bonny Doon Road. and there are a lot of resources deployed to protect BD Road |
| 6:05 | [Comment From leeanne] I was just trying to orient myself to the map and what I'm seeing on screen. and I was mostly interested in davenport. no disrespect to other areas!!!! |
| 6:05 | [Comment From Ca fireman] We always appriciate that thank you very much I know you here this a lot but after a long day fighting fire a thank you always means so much to us and the others on the line |
| 6:05 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, ID] Is there an updated map? |
| 6:05 | Brian Shields: Karen we don't have an updated Calfire map. We do have a file to see a detailed map we prepared for google earth here http://bit.ly/2q6GNI |
| 6:06 | Brian Shields: You do need to have Google Earth installed for that to work |
| 6:06 | [Comment From Karen - Boise, ID] ty |
